My computer crashed a couple of weeks ago. I borrowed a laptop and chatted with 2 Dell reps. They talked me through testing and told me to buy a new hard drive and the data is lost forever. I used the Best Answer to reboot it and was able to back up my files. I'm using that "dead" computer right now. I think they just wanted to sell me a hard drive. Has this happened to anybody else? By the way, thanks to Roy for the best answer.

I have a packard bell easynote E6100 Laptop... it is used on a large pine dining table.. and the cooling fan runs 99% of the time it is on... the vents are clean etc, its the only viable place i can use it....... any way i can stop this fan running constantly......or is there a problem with the computer itself....?

the problem is this; if i shut down the computer then start or if i restart the computer with the printer still attached at the usb port the computer comes on but the moniter shuts down it is'nt a monitor problem as i have tried it with another monitor but if i turn the computer of and disconnect the usb printer cable and turn the computer on everything is fine .im a bit bewildered as to what might be wrong.can someone explain and tell me how to put it right as its a pain in the *** diconnecting the cable all the time

okay installed a new graphics card and things just went wrong, really wrong, i don't know what happened. i lost the use of the second hard drive which is partitioned as d & e, it is not showing in my computer or disk management, however it is in the bios as the slave. the hard drive works and is readable in an external enclosure, i did put the old graphics card in but still no joy. i have just tried the hard drives on the secondary ide port and all works fine!!

Can anyone please help. Have connected my usb phone without a problem and can receive all calls clearly but my voice cannnot be heard by caller and of course this means I can't call out. I bought a used Laptop less than 6months ago from a guy on Craigslist. It is a Dell C600. The guy said it had bought Windows XP professional for it a few months earlier.
Well long story short after around three months I got the "not a genuine copy of Windows message" every time I turned on my Laptop.
I am looking to install Linux as I cannot afford Windows and cannot get a hold of the guy to replace it for me.
So I need some direction on how to remove Windows, I dont care if I loose all my info from my computer, not used for much but surfing.
Also if you have any suggestion on which version on Linux to use and where to get it from.
This computer id mainly used by my kids so a windows like distribution would be great.

i just got a 2nd computer unit with xp on it but it keeps saying
non system error or disk error replace and strike any key

I know nothing about computers and dont want mess around inside the unit but is they any way I can fix it.

it started doing it when computer went on idle and now when i try to reboot it says it but i have no disks in the computer.

i dont have xp cd but should i get a copy and try to reinstall or something else.

ok i was on the computer, window shut down and wouldn't reload, now i rebooted my computer and got a connection with the internet again after 14 hours. now it says i have 50 errors and if i dont correct them it was destroy my computer. what does this mean, what do u think happened. thanks

My BIOS supports large drives and I have 2 Maxtor 250 GB drives working fine. I am trying to add a Seagate ST3250623A drive (250GB PATA). I tried it in another computer that supports large drives with the same results. Is something wrong with the drive? My mobo is ASUS P4P800 Deluxe w/ 1019 BIOS.
