My machine was built by a friend of mine. I do not have the initial setup discs.

Need to know the operating system. If win 98 then make a boot disk and use it.

If you have a single hard drive in your computer, formatting it is going to remove all of the data on it. If you do not have the initial setup disks, then you will need to get them. I would contact the person that built your computer and ask them if they could do it for you, especially if you do have any technical knowledge about the computer in question. They may also be able to tell you if formatting your hard drive is the right solution to whatever problem you're trying to resolve.

check first whats your drive's file system. right click on drive-properties-filesystem. If it is Fat32 then you can use windows 98 startup disk. if it is Ntfs use any bootable windows 2000 or xp installer format it before installation of your desired OS..
