okay installed a new graphics card and things just went wrong, really wrong, i don't know what happened. i lost the use of the second hard drive which is partitioned as d & e, it is not showing in my computer or disk management, however it is in the bios as the slave. the hard drive works and is readable in an external enclosure, i did put the old graphics card in but still no joy. i have just tried the hard drives on the secondary ide port and all works fine!!

Since you can access the hard drive in an external enclosure, the problem is with your computer - not your hard drive. I don't know what kind of HD you have, but I have encountered similar issues with Western Digital and Maxtor - especially if you try to mix the two on the same pc. I assume you have one set to Master and the other set to slave. Try using 'cable select.' This has solved the problem for me a few times. Also check your IDE cables and connections.

Interesting, wish I was there to see it, I love a challenge! Ummmmm try Device Manager -> View -> Show Hidden Devices. Right click on all disk drives and all ide controllers and choose uninstall (Don't worry it keeps working) Then reboot and see what happens after that. If there's any way you can I would back it up in the external enclosure first!
