This is considering you're not on a fixed budget.

I'm about to retire my gaming machine to my 3 year old daughter, so I will be building the same machine I'm suggesting here.

Case: Aluminum with plenty of airflow.

Mother Board (as always) ASUS
(Best board for overclocking almost always and the Ai feature is great if you're new to overclocking. Also, pick a mother board that uses the Intel chip set - Via, ATI forget them too many compatibility issues)

Processor: Intel Core Duo
(Not sure which model just yet)

Graphics Card: NVidia - PCI Express
. . . SLI if it's in the budget!
(Not sure which model just yet)

Raid (0) a couple of WD Raptors as your start up drive. It will insure your the first one to start on all the game servers each time.

Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro (I currently have this set up and it's fricking awesome - Best sound set up ever by far, but it is kinda pricey . . . but I have been seeing it on sale.)
Memory: Kingston 2 gig minimum, probably 4 gig

Alt. Drives: 3.5 diskette, Blue Raid DVD

*** Do keep this in mind, without going off on a tangent. When MS releases Vista, the O/S will only run native on a machine built on Vista Certified Complient hardware. If the machine is running non-certified hardware it will run, but it will not run at full speed. It will use the old Direct X 9, rather than Vista's Direct X 10.

The reason for this is Micrsoft has made a deal with the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America. Under the agreement MS has stated that they will make it so that all newer O/S will not allow users the ability to copy any type of copy righted materials such as music, software or movies.

So, if a piece of hardware does not meet these guidelines, Microsoft will not certify the hardware and the O/S will not run in a native format, but rather in a slower interpolated mode.

Just something more to keep in mind if you're looking to build a new machine in the near future.

Good Luck

Well processor wise if you have a fairly large budget a Intel core 2 duo would be excellent for gaming.
Ati cards are good for single solutions if you want to run dual then opt for Nvidias Sli.
Motherboard wise Nvidia chipsets are better than the Ati ones at the moment, but remember you can run a Ati card on a nvidia chipset .
Manufacturer wise all of those companies make good boards though Asus in my opinion has been really shoveling out some buggy crap lately.

Whatever you build go dual core(but not pentium D), get atleast 2gb of ram and then chose the motherboard chipset and manufacturer that has the items you need.

My advice read customer reviews and if you plan to overclock search a few enthusiast sites to see how the motherboard you plan to get stacks up.

I just finished a new build including a DFI board with a Nvidia chipset and an eVGA Nvidia 7900 graphics card and it will take anything I can throw at it.

nVidia combo is the best at the moment.
As for overclocking, I've always heard Asus, DFI, and Biostar (in that order) but I have no experience with any of these brands.
