Can someone tell me in simple terms, what is a split horizon and route poisoning? Please really use simple terms as I am no IT expert.

I was attending a talk on IT the other day and after the talk, I can go nuts!

I'm trying to pick up a wifi signal. I have a 14dbi antenna (30ft cable) and I get a signal, but it drops consistently. I purchased a 18dbi Yagi antenna and I hope that will work. But I want to know if I use a inline cable amplifier (around 200mW) if that adds to the antenna strength, or does it just amplifies what signal I lost in the 30ft of cable.
My line of sight is not that clear (trees and branches) but I could probably trim some branches off. Will this help?

I've got a router, and a need to network some computers through it rather than through the cable router I've been given, that I can't configure. Namely, I need to work around some connection issues that are present without a Static IP computer connection, and I have to do it with two connections, and one Static IP.

I am trying to install Linksys wireless G broadband router to a brand new Compaq persario SR2170NX. The computer is hooked up to the internet through Verizon DSL using the ethernet. Once I try to hook up the router, the computer will not hook up to the internet, and the wireless router setup is asking for a password and info that I never use (I connect to the internet with Windows Explorer.)
So, that is the crux of my problem. I am also trying to hook up my laptop wirelessly to the internet, but once the original problem is fixed, the other will be too.
Any info would be great! I am computer illerate.

Thanks again!

OK here it goes...I run Windows 2000 Server (With SP4) for my domain controller at home (yep...Im a big time computer Geek!)...at school and all that we run Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server for domain controllers (as well as one or two Old NT 4.0 servers out there for storage, which will probally be replaced soon)
My Infrastucture will most likely stay under Windows 2000 server until about 2010 or so, becuase 2000 is still an up to date server system (although in mainsream support), and It is very stable, etc

here's my question: what do you use as your server OS? Windows Server 2003? Windows 2000 Server? WIndows NT? Novell? Linux?

I have a laptop with a wireless adapter that seems to be functioning perfectly...the only problem is nothing I try to do works. I've gone through all the configuration settings, help settings, etc and it shows that I have an excellent connection. However, when I try to login to Yahoo or open a website it says no connection available...yet I can SEE there is. I remember previously when this happened, someone told me to type some stuff in (I forgot) under the MSDos prompt screen and everything suddenly worked fine. Does anyone have any clue what's going on and a quick and painless way to get my computer's excellent signal to attach itself to what I'm trying to do and let me online?
It's a weird scenario because 99% of all the help for this type issue that's found online leads me back to where I started. Once I get an excellent/good signal, it should just work...yet it's not working.

HELLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!

I had Tiscali broadband for two years now with no problems at all. Now that I upgraded to vista I cannot connect to the internet with the modem I used before (Speedtouch 330). At fist the computer didn’t even recognize it and after long nights of trying and trying I finally got it to work but before I had the chance to enjoy my victory I find out it won’t connect to the net even with two solid light and everything else working fine technically speaking !!
So now I want to know if anyone had the same problem and/or found an alternative solution to the compatibility issue ? Also in a forum someone says he got it to work on a router but didn’t give much details about with model it was ! I wanna believe it’s true but I don’t want to try all existing routers to know which one it is ??
Please help if you can ! any thing will do ?

Thanks !

I have tried windows support, and this isn't a case of greyed out choices, or recent up grade. I have changed my registry, and made sure that telephony and network connections were started. I also tried to start a vpn with internet options, and I got the same result. If someone could help, I really appreciate it.
