My friend has just got a MAC and his router and modem are on a windows- would a regular adapter work and most importantly will the MAC pick up the signal from the router to get connection

Yes a MAC can get on a wireless network just the same as a PC.

How is a router on Windows, a router doesn't really have an O/S? A router just broadcasts the signal from the modem.

If you are just connecting to his computer or connecting to a router for internet? If you are just connecting to the router, then it should just pick up the signal and be fine. If not, then you may have to set up a network.
