We want to hook up two compuers to one cable internet connecion but we are unsure how to do this. One of the computer's is old and running 98SE, the other one is brand new and running XP... Will this affect anything? Will they still run independently? For example could Viruses or such things from the old one be transfered to the new one? Please help cause I'm unsure about this!!! Thank you so much for your time!! : )

I think I basically know the answer to this (wrong type of cable for job), but I would like a few details.
We're running wire in our office and the boss purchased "Vertical Riser Cat5e." And I've noticed that basically unless the cable is 10 feet or under and completely straight, it gets no data through it.
I guess my questions are:

1. Is this the wrong wire to be throwing around an office (90 degree angles, etc)?

2. What is the correct Cat5e for general cabling? (About 100 feet between switch and 'pute, but must be able to take corners)

3. What is a vertical riser cable meant to be used for if it is so finnicky?

Thanks a bunch!

I recently purchased a laptop and was wondering how fast my wireless router would have to be. My DSL line says 100 mbps speed on my computer and most routers have 54 mbps. Does this mean my laptop would have half the speed of my internet?

Basically at uni i share a wireless net connection with 3 other people. I updated my service pack to windows service pack 2, which helped as initially it found the connection (and had a wireless net work connection manager) and cut out for periods of several hours or more. Now it says the signal is 'very low' (i am using a usb network adapter, my friend said it is possibly due to the fact that a laptop card would pick up a wireless signal from a larger range), and cuts out but reconnects more often. Are there any compy buffs out there who can help me pls? Would be much appreciated...
