You want to clean up the adware and spyware. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Ad-aware cleans files and SpyBot cleans your registry.

All the advice here is very sensible, and you should have properly configured and up-to-date internet security program (firewall and anti-virus)

However, I allowed my childrens PC to run 'un-protected' for a short while, and I'm sure they didn't access porn sites - they were visiting sites looking for lyrics for songs - and they were trapped by a page which looks like a genuine windows error message ... which said something like you must click here because your computer will 'blah de blah' if you don't.

Unfortunately, my daughter was running as an administrator, I was away, she was worried about what would happen if she didn't click the button - so she clicked the button!

After that we kept getting windows system messages suggesting we should buy viagra, visit this site and that - not suitable for my young daughters.

I tried running various recommended spyware programs without any luck - the messages kept appearing - we even downloaded the yahoo toolbar. Eventually I bit the bullet and re-installed windows XP Pro. This was quite painless. It remembered all my network settings etc, and I just had to put back the various users and re-install our applications.

While the computer was still 'infected' I looked closely at the messages and noted these weren't html/explorer windows - these were in fact windows system mesages.

Much later I read that there was a way for a virus to switch on a windows 'service' which allows these kind of messages. I'm afraid I cannot find the info I had , but I think it was the messenger service (If you are an administrator you can find this under Administrative Tools, Services.) I'm not sure but this may have been the offending article. I have just checked on my totally well behaved, pc and note that this service is switched off.

Anyway. Hope this helps.

You have spyware.

Install a good virus protection suite & update it. Pc cillen by trendmicro is a good one & has a free online scan that also removes problems. AVG has a free version for download. Avast is another great free one.

Then start your pc in safe mode (depending on pc type this is usually a different key combination), generally as soon as you turn on the pc you hit the key combination F8 and choose safe mode. Don't be scared, it's supposed to look this weird. Safe mode runs the bare minimum, which is why you want to remove problem programs in it, they can't hide in safe mode like they can during normal start up. Then run your virus software. This should remove it. If not completely then you need to go to the trendmicro or symantec web site for further instructions. & try hitting it with the programs I listed below.

For future reference:

Always make sure your Window’s is completely updated, along with Office and Internet Explorer (if you insist on using it – version 6 is the worst so far for known issues).

Use a firewall, zone alarm is free & pretty user friendly. & get the following products.

Get Spybot Search & Destroy by Patrick Kolla Great free program for finding spyware. Don't be cheap, give the guy a donation.

Ad aware by lavasoft is free for personal use.

www.ewido.net - free after 30 days, limitation is that you have to manually update.

http://www.superantispyware.com is free.

& dump Internet Explorer. It's got more holes than swiss cheese. Get firefox, it has some really great add on extensions that block scripts, pop-up's & more ... & it's free. Depending on how you access the internet (some programs like Yahoo dsl, & Netzero try to force you to use Internet Explorer) just click on your Firefox icon to surf the web not Internet Explorer.

You can stop most programs from loading by using "msconfig". It's not on XP so you have to download it from a site such as perfectdrivers. Most programs beyond firewalls and virus protection do not need to run at start up. It's too bad that "Blackvipers" site is still down. He had an incredible list of how to stop unwanted and unneeded services in 2k & XP from running & slowing pc down. It is however still being posted on sites, so google his name.

Hijack this is a great program to see what programs are doing on your pc. Generally, you don’t need most of those programs. Hijack this has a lot of information about what is safe to disable & what is not safe. In general, you don’t need the vast majority beyond programs that have to run at start up, your web browser page of choice, virus protection & firewall hooks.

Hope I helped. & don't forget --> Just because you have protection doesn't mean it will work if you don't keep it updated & run it once a week. Just think of all the time you'll save not trying to repair a virus infection! It’s a lot of information but once you run through it & play with it it’s pretty simple.

You have to clean up your system when browsing the Internet a lot as unwanted software are left on your system. Firstly open Control Panel and go to Internet options (or in XP view, go to Network and Internet Connections) Click clear History. Click Delete Cookies and then click Delete Files. In the Window that pops up select Delete all offline content and then click OK.

After this, Download Adaware SE Personal Edition - see link below. Install and run this application to clean off any additional malicious software. It's free and very easy to use.

You've got some sort of spyware installed on your system causing the pop-ups. (Someone may have visited a porn site on your computer recently.) You'll need to run an antispyware program, and possibly an antivirus program to help you get rid of the spy-ware. Also try Ad-Aware. Ultimatly if you're still unable to get rid of the spyware, you could try Windows XP System Restore and if that doesn't work, reinstalling windows xp would be your last resort.

This is due to a resident "malware" program that installed itself onto your web browser. This most likely happened while someone on your PC was accessing questionable websites.

I use PC-Cillin Internet Security for several reasons. The obvious is that (primarily) it can prevent such "browser hijackers" from infecting your system. Moreso, however, it can very easily be programmed to block access to adult web sites altogether. You can also password protect the security settings in PC-Cillin so that no one else can change these settings to allow access to these sites.

You can download a trial copy here :

This would offer you a permanent solution as well as enabling to to prevent your childeren from accessing such sites. Very user friendly.

it's doing it because your computer is infected with spyware. remove the spyware with the programs Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

the spyware could have got on your computer in a few ways. it's probably because someone using it visited a porn/warez site and clicked on something malicious - generally a popup offering something explicit - that downloaded the spyware to your computer. be careful what you're clicking on!

Sounds like you may have got a browser hijack or other spyware.

Run an anti spyware program like Adaware or Spybot S&D to try and get rid of it. ( you can download them for free )

What browser are you using? If its Internet Explorer, consider moving to Firefox as its more secure.
