Basically at uni i share a wireless net connection with 3 other people. I updated my service pack to windows service pack 2, which helped as initially it found the connection (and had a wireless net work connection manager) and cut out for periods of several hours or more. Now it says the signal is 'very low' (i am using a usb network adapter, my friend said it is possibly due to the fact that a laptop card would pick up a wireless signal from a larger range), and cuts out but reconnects more often. Are there any compy buffs out there who can help me pls? Would be much appreciated...

Many factors will affect this. The main ones being:
- wireless adaptor's transmit power and receive sensitivity, which usually reflects the most their quality and price
- router's transmit power and receive sensitivity, like the adaptor
- it could be a software issue on computer although I doubt it in your case, just consider the option if you have other weird issues
- The router position and blocking objects also come into play. The router should always be as high as possible above the ground but also ensure it is as close as possible to all wireless access points, usually in the center of the house would be good. Also ensure it is not too close to a very massive object ((aquarium, filing cabinet, etc). Also try to avoid placing it close to other wireless devices (cordless phone base) and and big interference sources (washing machine, microwave oven, tv).

From what you're telling me your signal strength is low. There are only two things you can do to solve the problem; increase the signal strength or increase your ability to receive it. You can boost signal by moving the router away from electrical interference (even a few feet can make a difference), buying an SRX router (more powerful signal) or getting a range extender. You can boost signal reception by getting a better NIC card. The little antennas are a pain, but they do boost reception. Sometimes dramatically.

i might first attempt to run a diagnostic on the gadget. I truly have a under pressure & instant Cisco router and it has that function. that's a cord that replaced into no longer crimped to the plug precise (i.e. the cord replaced into no longer stripped sufficient). additionally examine with the provider and have them run a attempt on your line. I truly have the comparable project with Cox Cable and at nighttime I often won't be able to connect. Their matters may well be a line replaced into by probability decrease, they're doing paintings or working diagnostics at that factor, climate matters etc.
