The hyphen is on the top row, between 0 and =. You don't need the shift key. Shift + - is the underscore _
If you type is without spaces either side, it's called a hyphen. If you use spaces either side - like this - it's a dash.

The hyphen looks like a short dash - like that. The key is usually on the same row as the numbers (the row above the QWERTY row) directly to the right of the zero key.
In other words, look for the row that has 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 -
That last one is the hyphen.

Hyphen - the key next to the zero on the upper row of the keyboard. It's also called a dash mark. If you use the shift key and hyphen you get the underscore.

This: - is a hyphen. In a word document if you want a longer one just type two of them --then type your next word directly infront of it and once you press the space bar immediately after typing the two minus signs will seem to join and look like just one long hyphen.
You will find it on a keyboard at the far right hand corner of your keyboard or one after your 'closed brackets sign, which looks like ). It's not to be mistake with the _ which is known as an underscore and it doesn't serve the same purpose of the ~ sign which is used for different purposes all together.
Think of it as a minus sign that's also used in sentences.

Proper spelling = HYPHEN
Depending on your keyboard set up the key may be in different locations. It is usually in the second row from the top following the digit keys.
Usually located near the "+,=,0,)" keys.
