We mainly want to be able to download files from each others computer. But I also want to be able to browse his computers folders. (The folders he lets me have access to.)

The safe way to go, is to get an FTP account. That way you can upload a bunch of files that he wants, and you can upload a bunch of files that you want. Then either of you can do downloads whenever it is convenient.

The other option is to get a VPN channel going. But use a password. GoToMyPC is a good option. Visit http://GoToMyPC.com

The best way is to use an on-line file backup system, with which you store some of your files on a computer on the Internet. One example is MediaMax. The advantage to doing this is that you don't expose your computer to the possible hazzards of opening up file sharing over the Internet.

What you do then, after the account is setup, simply point to the directories you want to upload, and that directory structure will be available on the Internet, to those you give the account information to. Some of these services offer a certain amount of file space (half a gig or more) for free. Much safer.

Using Yahoo Messenger, you can set whatever folder you want as your "shared" folder and give access to whoever you want to that share. Once your friend has done that, right-click and "Get File". The contents of the folder he shared out should be visible.

I'm at work so I'm completely going by memory. It could me AIM I'm thinking about but I'm pretty sure it's Yahoo.

they would have to give you remote access to do so. My neighbor does that for his mother in law because she's clueless about computers and he'll help her while she's on the comp at the same time. Under "My Computer" have your friend go to "View System Info" and click on the remote tab. Have them click the top box allowing remote connections to be sent from their computer then have them click on the bottom box and they can choose the person they want remote access to go to. its not hard...you may just have to be there to help or talk them through it over the phone if you're great with computers. After that, you are free to roam about their computer to help them out. Hope this helps :)

You can use http://www.RealVNC.com to access it real time. The easiest way would be to by pass the routers on each end but that would leave you open to a huge security risk. Start the server on ther remote computer and enter the remote computer's IP address in the local client computer. You can do the sme thing with telephone lines but it is painfully slow.
Second option is a service like http://www.GoToMyPC.com or a free service like http://www.NO-IP.com With either service you will need to boneup on http://www.PortForward.com It's not hard you just need to read.

Go to the Help & Support tab in your start menu....and search topics for Remote Assistance....I believe you can access other computers this way. But your friend will need to configure his computer to allow it AND send you remote access invitations (which are time limited)....unless you were set up with a full network system.

Choices:

1. VPN or SSH tunnel... I've never made them work through a firewall.
2. Use MSN Messenger's Share Dektop... May or may nor work.
3. Both of you may join Limewire and password-protect the entrance, or share freely with the rest of LW community.
4. Use a shared web suitcase... Yahoo has.

Set up an FTP server on each computer...then you can use an FTP client to connect to each other's server and you can both access each other's hard drives. Just make sure to password protect the account you set up on the FTP or anyone can get in just by typing your ip address.

You can do it with a VPN, they can be a pain and tricky to setup. Look into a program called "Log Me In" or try any of the PC Anywhere-type services; they all (including Log Me In) do all the setup for you, you create a shortcut on your desktop and you're in with a user name and password, just like a VPN but you don't have to perform brain surgery to get it to work.
