Computer Networking - October 2006

My cable modem is on the 2nd floor and I have 3 computers on the 2rd, 1 computer on the 1st and 1 computer in the basement.
I currently have a 4 port router and one computer doesnt have internet access.
The setup I want is all the computers online without having to relocate the modem and the ability to have lan parties(that are online too) in the basement while having all the other computers online too.
modem+router --> 4 PCs + basement PC that can have more PC's connected.

What do I need to do this?

I have a laptop and I am having trouble getting drivers for the ethernet controller so I can access the internet. Is there a way to network the laptop to the desktop and pull the internet connection that is working on the desktop? If so, how exactly do I do that and what do I need? I currently have a wired router that I would like to upgrade to make it wireless. Currently I have my xbox 360, playstation 2, and my main desktop computer connected. I want to set up as wireless so that I can connect my laptop. Can I use a wire router AND a wireless router together or do I need to just convert everyting to wireless and if so what do I buy that would work?

Lately, my wireless internet for my laptop will show a strong singal but the speed will not stay at a constant high. It will go down seemingly without reason to 24mpbs. This happens even when I am right near the router. My neighbors are using channel 6 on their routers so I am using channel 1. I have tried other channels as well and nothing is helping. Also, the cordless phone is not to blame because I have a 5 ghz phone so it will not interfere with my network. My apartment is small and for over a year until recently I have had no issues.
So I am ruling out the following:
-interference from any other wifi networks around my apt

-cordless phone

-distance


So what else could it be?
