i have two computers all runing xp2. one is connected to the internet thru dsl modem but using usb for the connection. it is registered as lan. after installing the straight network between the two computers, the second one was registered lan2 but gives the error limited connection or no connectivity. the two pcs cannot communicate and the error \\name is not accessible. is it because the host has two local area network connection, (thus the one of the internet and the straight connection with the other pc)? how can dis problem be solved?

I want to have a wireless Internet connection at home, and want to buy a wireless router (probably Linksys). Currently I only have my laptop right now with built in wireless capabilities.. I will add another PC or laptop to the network later but want to run only one machine now. My questions is:

After setting up the router (with my laptop connected by wire), Will I be able to unplug the wire and get a wireless internet connection with just the wireless router connected to the cable modem ? Must the router and modem be wired to a PC in order to work?

I use to have Netscape Webmail mail and newsgroup service. This no longer exist as netscape 7.1 barely works and they cancelled that service. I was able to set up Outlook Express with Hotmail but today i was informed that it will no longer work with the free account.
I tried setting up my aim account on Outlook but I don't understand how and what the configurations are supposed to be. Can anyone please help in plain simple English and with step by step directions. I really don't know what POP3 or IMAP etc are and which ones to use and what else to type with it. example--imap.aim.com, or whatever!

I am a tech but i dont know anything about raids. so here we go.

currently the server has 4 disks in some kind of raid. how do i check what kind of raid they are in? my total HD space is 350. i want to change that to be 2 hard drives each mirrored. so it would still be 4 hard drives but it would be 2 seperate mirrors. like 1-1 and 2-2 .each of 250.

Just don't wanna get caught! what can i do to ensure that the IT guys who sit right on the top floor of this huge building has no idea what i'm doing?

ok i'm trying to figure out how to log into a VNC server with a viewer.lets say i have setup a server on another computer. i want to remote desktop into it using a viewer. when i try to use the viewer it has a place where you can type in the server you want to connect to. my question is do i put in the external address and the port number of the computer that has the server on it? if so how do i find out what the correct ip address and the port number is so i can view my computer.

I work on a large LAN and I'd like to be able to show users the actual speed of the network in BYTES per second. I don't want to just send large files across it and see how long they take because that is also dependent on computer speed. This test should just generate random data from one NIC and see how fast another NIC can receive it and show the results in simple terms. In other words, it should just hammer the network and show me what it can do.

I've found some programs that do similar things, or seem to, but none that just do this one task well. They all seem to be limited by how fast a machine can pull data off the hard drive (in the case of gigabit links) and I want to be able to say "The actual top speed between This building and That building is X megaBYTES per second."

Anyone know of a simple (cheap/free) app that can do this?

My company is getting a new FTP server. Is XP sufficient, or is the cost of Win2003Server still justified for merely running an FTP server on this machine?

Also- what is the best practice for FTP... Do i really need RAID1 for OS & RAID5 for data? Thats how our main servers will be setup, but i'm not sure its necessary on something as simple as an FTP machine.
