ok i'm trying to figure out how to log into a VNC server with a viewer.lets say i have setup a server on another computer. i want to remote desktop into it using a viewer. when i try to use the viewer it has a place where you can type in the server you want to connect to. my question is do i put in the external address and the port number of the computer that has the server on it? if so how do i find out what the correct ip address and the port number is so i can view my computer.

i want to be able to use vnc from a computer in location A which is 10 miles from location B. wouldn't i need to use an external IP address with a port number? i mean how would i just be able to type in the computer name and it would find it?

VNC only requires your IP address or your Computer Name if you're on a local area network. Your PC Name should be available from the 'Network Identification' tab on your 'My Computer' properties.
Your IP address signifies that you should have your network set to TCP/IP protocol and the address should be visible from your TCP/IP properties in your lan connection properties

This question is one of those "deceptively easy" ones. The basic operation of VNC is to use an IP address. You can get my_computer_name => IP address functionality with a dynamic dns service such as no-ip.com . If you are using a router on the server (the computer you want to log into) then you will have to forward the correct port through to the server (5900 if I remember correctly). This is the big picture version, if you need more details just ask.

You need either the other machine's name or its IP address. You do NOT need a port number unless you changed the port on the server end.
