Simple.
1. You will need a network interface for every machine you want to connect to your network.

2. For every machine (pc usually) that is within range or can be cabled, you will need a NIC (Ethernet adapter). You will connect this to your switch (or router) using ethernet cable (preferably CAT5e or CAT6)

3. For your mobile devices (such as Laptops, WiFi enabled palms pdas etc..) You will need a Wireless interface (a Wireless NIC).

4. You can also get a wireless NIC for your PC if you don't want to pull wires etc.

5. If you do plan on having wireless devices, Make sure you get a router that supports Wireless (With an antenna, or 2 for better range)

6. Goodluck!!

PS. Wireless networking between ur devices is slower than wired.

NIC (Network Interface Card) is usually used in WIRED Ethernet network, means you either direct connect 2 computers with crossover cable, or connect 2 or more computers to router. In this type of network, each computer must be equipped with a NIC. Check out here to learn more on how to set up wired home network: http://www.home-network-help.com/home-network.html

Wireless card is usually used in WIRELESS network, means no cabling involved.. In wireless network, each computer must be equipped with a wireless adapter. If you only have 2 computers, you can set up ad-hoc wireless network. If you have more computers, you need to have wireless router or access point to build this network. Hope this helps.. :o)
