Ok, this isn't a repeat question. My computer is infected and gets the fake "Critical Error","You have Malware. Click here to download Free Spyware." The thing is that there is a virus on my computer, and I went to all of these "free" sights to get the software and they all require me to put a credit card number in . The viruses on my computer are monitoring my computer to capture my keystrokes and get cc info, so that's out of the question. So I need to know if there are any antivirus/malware programs that are truly free without having to give my credit card information.

what i want to do is do a big wipeout of the entire hd, i made a hp recovery disk yesterday... but anyways i backed up all my important stuff like: music,pictures...etc w/ norton ghost and it backed up all of the stuff to a folder... but once i format my hd, those files that were backed up w/ norton ghost will be erased won't it be? if so, is there any way that i can backup the files somewhere... i have about almost close to 5 GB of files and the upload would take forever, and also i tried partioning with many things, first i tried computer management>disk management then tried it there, but it didn't show an option to add a new partion and i tried partionmagic, and i dont have a dvd burner to burn em to i only have a dvd player.

I have an Epsom perfection 610 scanner. I've had it for almost 7 yrs. I'm tired of the dust issue. The labor and time of using rubber stamp or noise filters. Now I have an important home project and want the best quality image. I don't really see any easy way to get it apart..and how would I prevent it? Should I just get a new sacnner or does this eventually happen to the best of 'em?
Thanks.

I recently visited Jordan and while there, somebody else (a so called expert) changed my internet settings so that I could access a local network. Unfortunately, now I'm back in the UK I can't connect to my home network. My connection manager can 'see' the network and even says it is connected, but when I use IE or Firefox I get nothing (page cannot be displayed/proxy server refusing connections). I have a BT home hub and have accessed the admin area and looked at the settings, everything appears to be fine. I have checked the WEP keys are correct, rebooted, disabled firewalls, etc and can't think of anything else to try. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a classic hub that does NOT have switching technology. An article I read a while back stated that a switched/hub is more efficient for a little home network. Should I invest in a switch/hub and discard my loyal, trusted Hub-only technology? What is the benefit of the switch technology?

I've had Vista Home Premium for awhile, and am becoming more cautious about updates to the point of turning off the auto-update function. There are plenty of people who are superstituous about it, and the large number of the updates bother me for fear of driver stability and for my changes to remain untouched.
The Vista FAQs don't seem to offer any specific information about updating, only to "do it" for security and w/e other reasons. Are there people who keep track of what each new update does, anyone here notice unauthorized changes after updating? I want to keep updated in terms of improved compatibility and so on, but are some people right to worry about updates or is it just superstition?

I have a HP Pavillion desktop and have had absolutely no problems with it, but i want to get rid of the desktop clutter.
I use the computer primarily for e-mail, playing online games, nothing very graphic things like poker. Have never bought a game but may in the future. I do use a printer a lot. Have never downloaded music or videos. What would you suggest I get ? I have highspeed cable internet and a lot of folders with saved sights so i do need space. Would like to stick to an HP because I have been very happy with it.
