Also, what operating system do you have. It is a pain to set up the software for a wireless card in Windows 95/98/Millenium and you need an older card that has drivers and software for these operating systems available. I am not even sure if a wireless card is possible with Windows 95 and 98 is probably slightly harder than Millenium to find drivers. I think Windows 2000 has similar issues but I cannot remember for sure. Windows XP works great, though I think it helps a bit to install the Service Pack 2 update if your System Control Panel does not show the SP2 edition.

As for hardware, if your computer has an empty PCMCIA card slot, this is the slot any older laptop would have if it has a slot at all, you are fine and that is the best option. If not, USB would work too. If the processor is really old, like 400mhz or slower, it might function very poorly with the card and you need to watch out for that and check what the card claims to require. You might be able to go a little lower, but not way lower without major problems.

A wireless (WIFI) card attaches to your system through a PCI slot. If you have an available slot then you're in business.

If your friends system is running XP then there should be not problem, if he/she is running Win98, then the setup will be a little more complicated, but can be done.

A word of warning. If your friend "is" running 98, do not allow it to be connected to your network. There is no longer any security support for 98 and therefor it is extremely vulnerable to security attacks.

if you buy a pci one then you will need a spare pci slot it will only fit in one type of slot usually white in colour and there is normally between 3 and 5 on your motherboard each lining up with the holes in the back of your case. either that or buy a usb dongle one and put it into any spare usb port that you have
