perhaps you have too many applications running at the same time. try to limit the programs running all together. you can also upgrade your RAM so that your computer will have more space. for the last resort, just format your computer.

It depends on what's making it slow. Delete any unnecessary files or programs and defragment your computer at least once a month (there are various online guides for doing this), as that can make all the difference in the world. Also, consider how old your computer is and whether there have been any thunderstorms lately; computers slow down with age, and thunderstorms can wreak havoc on them (especially desktops). However, if those don't significantly help the problem, you may have a virus or other unwanted software on your computer; telltale signs of this are excessive popups (especially if they're coming up when you aren't even on the internet), strange error messages, programs that you never installed suddenly appearing, inability to connect to the internet, and constant problems with programs not responding/randomly closing. If that's the case, use your antivirus software to remove the virus (I'll warn you that Norton isn't very good for this; I personally recommend AVG, which can be downloaded for free), and then set up preventative measures. Use a firewall and other virus blockers, and make sure your internet browser has free virus protection (Mozilla Firefox does, and I believe Opera might as well). Of course, not every computer problem is caused by a virus, but some are, so it's important to protect your computer.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
http://www.delete-computer-history.com/what-is-the-best-registry-cleaner.html

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.

Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

Here are the steps

1. Disk Cleanup (Programs > Accessories > System Tools>)
2. Disk Defrag ( same location as above)
3. Make sure your Antivirus subscription is current if you have one, if you don't
www.avast.com or www.avg.com should help

4. If you do have some Norton or McAffee, Run an online scan

www.trendmicro.com

choose personal and then housecall

or

www.ewido.net redirects you to AVG and they have an online scan, make sure you enable the activex or java control when it prompts or blocks it.

These are all the steps you can do finetune that are a little simple

Next go to startup

Start > Run >

type in msconfig it opens up all the startup items, lot of the time everything you install gets added at startup, you don't need that, you can application when you need to use it, you don't need them running all the time.

So uncheck the applications you know for sure you are not going to use, try not to touch anything that relates to system or MS.

If you even want to go step ahead, disable the services that you are not using.

Little software or memory boost,

freeramxppro

defrags your memory and keeps your computer peppy

I disagree. My computer was really slow too, but this is what I did, and it fixed the problem very well.

1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Add/Remove Programs
4. Select programs you don't use often, or at all, and remove them from your computer.
5. Go to Recycle Bin and Clear it.
6. Enjoy a Faster Computer

If it is still slow:

1. Buy a Free Agent, which is a device that can hold all the info on you computer that you want.
2. Save your Pictures and any documents you want to save onto the free agent, and delete them of your computer. Remember to clear the recycle bin.

An alternitive is to print the pics on your computer and delete them, or just delete the ones you don't like.

You computer is probubly low on Virtual memory, so deleting unnessisary things like unused docments, music, pics and programs, like games (you should only have one or two games installed at a time) should deffinately fix the problem

If this doesn't help, then you've got a virus problem.

2 programs included with windows can help speed up your computer considerably what you want to do is go to your Start menu than drag the mouse over all programs than over accessories than over disk cleanup check the appropriate boxes and press start. After the disk cleanup is finished run the program defrag first analyze your hard drive it will tell you if it needs to be defragmented or not its in the same list as the disk cleanup utility you may need or may not need to resart your computer before doing this it will tell you either way. hope that helps good luck.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

this are the softwares i being using for over two years without any complaints, for a better job restart your computer in safe mode( if you don't know how click this link http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.s...
then when windows start scan your computer and heal all the infected files, also try an antispyware.

1-. AVG free edition (antivirus only), get it free at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/download-free...

2-. Ad.Aware 2007 (antispyware)
http://www.download.com/ad-aware-2007/30...

3-. Spybot search and destroy (antispyware)
http://www.download.com/spybot-search-de...

4-. ccleaner (increase computer performance deleting unused entries and registries.
http://www.download.com/ccleaner/3000-21...

5.- Zone alarm (firewall) Equip your system to deal with Web-based security threats including hackers, viruses, and worms.
http://www.download.com/zonealarm-securi...

6.- SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place.

http://www.download.com/spywareblaster/3...

What i recommend is to use the spybot S D only once per week. Then use AVG and Ad-aware as default for daily use. Use ccleaner two times per week to keep your PC running smoothly, Never install more than one antivirus, as they may conflict with each other. On the other hand, is always good to use more than one anti spyware

You need to clean it up as well as use an anti-virus program.
This one is free for as long as you need it & will get your computer up and going & remove viruses & invaders to your computer.
Always do a disk / computer clean-up also & here's how:
Click on tools, after it opens up go to general on top tabs & click. In middle of page it says delete & click it, another little box opens that says also delete files & folders stored by add on's & check this box & OK & OK again to close.
