I installed McAfee on my computer about two weeks ago, and it seems like every scan I've done has resulted in error messages pertaining to the scan itself, and after I click the "fix" button, I get a popup box that says one or more problems can't be fix. I just finished a scan a few minutes ago and got this message:

Real-time scanning is disabled.
Spyware and potentially unwanted program scanning is disabled.
IM scanning is disabled.
Script scanning is disabled (with a link to ignore this option)
Buffer overflow protection is disabled (also with an "ignore" option).

You can see from my past couple of questions that I've been having a lot of problems the past few weeks with spyware, and I'm still trying to figure out the best program(s) to get everything off of my computer. Am I correct in assuming that these problems with McAfee might be making it harder for me to get all the spyware off? If so, do I need to re-install McAfee and start over from square one?

I own a Toshiba Satellite for almost 3 years and it is having all kinds of hardware and software issue. At work we are using HP and works very good but maybe it is becasue I cannot install many things on the work computer and it is not moving so much with me.

Now I want to buy a new laptop and the main question is; is there such thing as a most problem free laptop brand? If this was a question for cars, I would reply Toyota or VW or Mercedes. If there is I will prefer that brand even if it is more expensive.

I asked the question to laptop repairing guy, that I know thanks to my Toshiba and he tells me all laptops are the same as they are manufactured in same factories with same components. Branding is just marketing. I wonder if it is true.

Thanks for your answers.

Okay, I've read all around that it's possible but it's totally not for a beginner. The thing is that yeah, maybe I do need a converter box but I'm not looking foward to use the backlight. I just want to get the display to show. Apparently my laptop lcd has 1 ground wire split into 3 and the port that was connected to the motherboard.

I'm thinking of just taking a guess with what wire goes to what on a cut off VGA cord. I mean, what do I got to lose? The lcd is nice and it last worked when the laptop last worked lol and if I can't use it, might as well experiment with it.

So is this possible? No backlight, just the lcd screen?

Let me know. And would this damage my computer? haha

This recent data loss is appalling. I can't believe that a young low level worker had access to the entire UK population database and was able to download the data unencrypted and send it in the mail. I believe that companies such as EDS, Cap Gemini and Capita bid for these contracts. I have also heard that they are not implemented proper Microsoft levels of security having reduced the "walled gardens" and gone for a flat data structure. They have also embraced remote virtual desktop technology and outsourced much of their work using a leverage model to reduce costs and increase profits.

Are these cost cutting short cuts responsible for a situation where personal and national security has been massively breached?

I have these important questions which I always contemplate in my mind after noticing that peoples has got all my yahoo contact details.

-How can others get my yahoo password without sharing pc's?
-Can someone access my pc from remote without my knowledge?
-What is riskware/malware?

Of course,I remember one day that I clicked one link which was sent to my messenger from my friend which I later found that it was a virus. This virus sent the same link to all contact lists in my yahoo messenger and I am suspecting that this might be the link which allowed others to get my password.

I hope you will give me detailed information on this.

I was using a freeware called spybot-search & destroy. After I used it I rebooted my computer.I tried to open outlook, it asked me if I should change a registry value because of some error. The buttons were not visible only the upper portions were, so I clicked on the left one and the registry changed due to which entire microsoft office doesn't open. I checked the excludes directory of spybot and got the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\rvoncl=C:\WINDOWS\System32\rfkvcn.exe reg_run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\nsvod=C:\WINDOWS\System32\rfkvcn.exe reg_run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSMSGS="C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

back up directory is empty. There are many other directories. I dont know where to look into. Is there a way out in the registry editor. My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run ,most are empty

im hoping to get a pretty reasonable desktop computer working with a budget of maybe 1.5-1.8K (aus) ...

(at the moment, my laptop is the laggiest of laggers.. i put a dvd in AND IT LAGS, even though it would be the only window open.. for crying out loud, i put a cd in, A CD! AND IT LAGS! ...)

i dont mind getting it custom built, but i need help with hardware specs so i dont end up paying for stuff i wouldnt really need.

- im not a fulltime hardcore gamer, only occasionally.. well maybe i would be a lil hardcore were it not for my laggy comp.. i think i'll play sims 2 often =]
- i usually listen to music while im doing stuff
- i more than often have 3 or more windows open simultaneously
- i want to watch/edit/burn vids/mulitmedia/pics without it lagging
- i multitask heaps ..
-i like things fast..
-i wouldnt want the cpu to sound like a lawnmower..
-it would be nice if the comp was sexy, but i need it to be a rocket =]

advice would be cool =] ty

I have two one-hour lectures on two separate DVD disks ( 1.3 GB and 1.8 GB). I want to put both of them on one disk (4.7 GB space available). I have 40 GB available on HDD. The optical drive is DVD - R. I also have installed on my computer : Nero StartSmart; Power Producer 2 Gold; and of course, Windows Movie Maker.

O.K. I want to know how to combine those DVDs. Thank you so very much for your assistance.

for example, does a 2.0 ghz intel duo core processor drain more battery than a 1.6 ghz intel duo core processor?

I'm looking to buy a laptop with good battery life, so should I stick with 1.6 ghz w/ 2 gb of ram? or go for 2.0 ghz? I don't plan to use it for gaming or watching any movies, just for programming and homework/web browsing, thanks.
