Check in BIOS if PS/2 mouse support is disabled instead of auto. BIOS of my ASUS 945GC has that setting.

There may be two reason.
1. PS/2 cable is not connected in motherboard.
2. May be some pin of PS2 cable is broken.
You can also check in computer management in control panel.
Pls also check if by mistake you are connecting to PS2 keyboard port
