Normally no, but since defragmenting involves a good amount of time when the disk head is reading and writing, it may be a good idea to back up the critical data files before starting that. If the hard disk crashes during the defrag operation, the data is gone.

nup, defragmenting doesnt delete files on your computer, it just re-arranges them for better performance. U might want to close down any programs u have running in the background (including your screen saver) before defragging though, and do a disk cleanup (found in your accessories)
It's always good to keep in mind though, that a regular backup saves a lot of hassle!

Defragmentation is the process by which the os brings the files spread over distant sectors on the harddisk closer for a quicker access. You don't have to backup any files as there is not going to be any deletion. Just moving sectirs memory.

It is totally safe

No. Defragmenting file only take garbage off the hard drive. I think. I never back up files when defragmenting.

But when I am doing something really serious like testing something out on my PC I'll back up my files on the internet.
