what i want to do is do a big wipeout of the entire hd, i made a hp recovery disk yesterday... but anyways i backed up all my important stuff like: music,pictures...etc w/ norton ghost and it backed up all of the stuff to a folder... but once i format my hd, those files that were backed up w/ norton ghost will be erased won't it be? if so, is there any way that i can backup the files somewhere... i have about almost close to 5 GB of files and the upload would take forever, and also i tried partioning with many things, first i tried computer management>disk management then tried it there, but it didn't show an option to add a new partion and i tried partionmagic, and i dont have a dvd burner to burn em to i only have a dvd player.

Well 5 GB isn't that big amount of data you can write them on CD-R or RW (so that you can use them later) that's about 7 Cd's. partitioning is a problem usually faced with pre-installed operating systems. HP automatically decides the partitioning mode. Usually partition magic does the job. when you format all the data will be wiped clean.

As a long term solution I suggest you invest in either a DVD writer or an External HD. because You are always advised to make periodic backups of all your important data.

Hope this helps and I am happy to help you if you need anything else.

You are trying to do several things at once here. First you indicated that you used norton Ghost. A very fine program. But that brings a question to mind ! Why are you wiping out the hard drive.??? At this point it is the most important question. Keep it mind that ghost makes a faithful copy of the drive image !!
If the purpose of the task at hand is to get rid of bad stuff on the hard drive, then ghost is just going to put it all back exactly the way it was before wiping the drive. Norton wipedisk will wipe a drive better than format. Restoring 5 gig of files is not that involved form a DVD. Next, is there a reason for fiddling with partitions???

If you dont have any free disk space then you will not be able to create a partition with native windows tools. Partition magic should enable you to reallocate "unused" space on your existing partition to create a new partition. Re-evaluate that program and see if you find this option(i have not used it in years so dont recall the menu options). If your unable to do this then you will need to purchase a external HDD or a burner. If ylou are saving that many personal and important files then it would be a good idea anyway to have something like this.
