speed will be reduced because you are sharing your bandwidth so to do so you will need a router or hub which acts like a splitter on the connection coming from your modem. You will be able to run two separate ethernet cables to each pc or if it is a wireless router one or both may connect via a wireless card.

My advice would be to just unplug one pc and plug the connection into the other seeing as how you don't have a very fast connection.

You will need either a router or a network switch. If you new laptop is WIFI capable, then a WIFI router is the way to go. You will need an extra piece of CAT5 cable. Here's how it works. Connect the cable from your broadband modem to the router and the a cable from the router to the PC. That will take care of the Desk Top computer. For the laptop, click the little network icon in the system tray and tell it to look for any available networks. It should find the router and connect to it. Then you will be able to use the laptop just about anywhere in the house.

Install a router behind your modem. The PC's will then connect to the router. Go to your local computer retailer and take a look at the options available from the likes of linksys, netgear, belkin etc they are all good products. decide based on price.
