Maintenance & Repairs - February 2007

I've been having a problem that has been very hard to diagnose, because its so random, it happens on the road, but never in my garage when I try to fix it.

It seems to be that every now and then the engine will cut out for a split second. Enough to throw you forward in the seat real quick. It feels like alot stronger of a jerk than just a single cylinder misfire. It does not trigger the check engine light either. Seems to happen most between 2-5K RPM's

It actually completely cut out about a week ago and wouldn't start up anymore, but I replaced the distributor cap/rotor at that point and the car worked again (although the engine sounds alot different, not necessarily bad, just it used to sound like a vroooom honda rice burner, now it sounds like a rooooar muscle car, just quieter). Anyways I thought that solved the problem, but its happening again. I've got all new spark plugs, cap/rotor, and fuel filter. the plug wires are about 2 years old, the igniter is about 2 years old.

I have a 1993 Toyota camry with 200,000miles. The things that i need to repair is front and rear engine mounts, oil pan gasket, valve covers, piston rings, timing belt, front seals, water pump, antenna, middle seat belt, driver side and passenger side window regulators. I have a small oil leak and frame damage to the underside of my car. Are these major problems? Should I just replace the vehicle with a new car? I have already spent about 900 dollars in 4 weeks getting a tune up and brakes. I need something dependable for my children and I. I have an option of getting a 2005 pontiac grand awith car payments within my budget. I just don't want to keep spending mone if the car has ran its course.

Sometimes (not always) when I drive and after I hit the brakes, after the car's stopped, I will notice there is a medium-volume high pitched grinding noise (like a really fat bee right next to your ear) which sounds like it's coming from under the hood. Could it be the brakes even though the car already stopped? I've tried shifting into neutral and parked (it's an automatic and yes I let off the brakes in park)....the noise still happens. However, after I drive for about 1 or 2 more blocks and stop at another red light, the noise will be gone. Any ideas?

Lately when I start out driving, I notice a shaking or vibration from my car that is very noticeable, especially to passengers with a little more auto knowledge than me. Once I get going up to speed it seems to go away. Is this a tire problem where maybe a simple rotation could be the solution? I drive an '01 Grand Prix.

It's stuck tighter than any bolt I've ever had to deal with. I've used both heat and cold, but it's no use. It's part of an extremely expensive (>$1000) piece of exercise equipment, so I can't use too much force.
I'm really going crazy over this. Please help me!

I recently replaced the ball joints, tie rod ends, and tires balanced, plus had a front end alignment done. It seemed fine for a few weks, but now I'm getting a solid vibration the the steering wheel, especially at around 45-55 mph. Any ideas?

After a very cold night (~10F), I would try to start my car the next morning. I would turn the key and the starter would crank normally like any other day and the engine would fire up, but when i release the key, the rpm drops, engine sputters, then dies. If i turn the key and hold it in the cranking position for roughly 2-3 seconds after the engine fires up, everything seems to be fine.

The motor mount on my 88 Mazda 323 (front side) has gone out. It hasn't broken yet, but the rubber insides have deteriorated. SO, the motor has started to jump on me a little bit.

I've checked prices at the local major retailers (AutoZone, Advance Auto, NAPA, etc.) and found prices seem to be between $80-$90 for a replacement aftermarket part. After looking online, though, I have found onlin retailers with prices as low as $35! Should I trust the manufacturers or these less expensive mounts, or is this too good to be true?

On a side note, how hard is to change a motor mount? I can change my wheel bearings or tweak my engine with little difficulty, so I'm no novice. However, if this is major surgery (like trying to change a head gasket), I think I might leave it to a shop.

Took my 2002 Ford Winstar in for a oil change and they said the coolant was brown? Is this serious and what could cause it?

One in the transmission, one in the engine. He says that for the transmission the part needed for the repair is a filter joint. Would someone kindly tell me what this is? The part and oil is 86 dollars...labour 166..is this reasonable? What could cause this to leak? Second he said the engine is leaking oil somewhere too. He will clean the engine and find the leak. How could these two things happened at the same time??? Is my engine finished?
Also, didn't have a oil change done for a few months (6), I know I should have but whats done is done. Learned my lesson. Could this have something to do with the leaks?
