First of all, if the light is on, then my suggestion would be to go to autozone or advanced auto parts and have them diagnose it (for free!). It may be a temporary, but recurring problem with the vehicle. If that is not the issue, then the next thing you should do is to try resetting the light. Without knowing the year, make and model of the vehicle, I can't tell you how to do that for sure, but I know that many vehicles have a reset button in the fuse panel. I know mine is in the fuse panel by the driver's door to the left of the instrument cluster. Your owner's manual, or a vehicle repair book, or the internet should be able to give you specific instructions.
Also, check your manual and applicable repair books for troubleshooting procedures.
If all else fails, bring it to the shop. But my thought is that it is cheaper to go to autozone or advanced auto and purchase the haynes repair guide for $20 than it is to have it professionally diagnosed by a mechanic. Just do yourself a favor. If you see a procedure that you're not comfortable doing, don't do it. Get somebody who knows what they're doing to help you.

Most likely a fault like a spark miss or failing Catalyst. You will get intermittent faults when you have an ignition problem. Check your spark plug wires for continuity and resistance change them if they are out of spec, change your spark plugs. Replace the o2 sensor if failing.
If its your catalytic converters going bad theres an old fix that might makeum last a few months more. Take the cats off and use a high pressure water blaster to blow the insides clean sometimes the matrix inside becomes clogged and if its free flowing it wont set off an obd fault.

Having worked in a dealership for 13 yrs, I will tell you that it could be something as simple as not tightening your gas cap to something major such as a misfire in the engine to a transmission slip. I would take it to Autozone and have it checked. They will do it for free, and you'll know what to do next. Try to take it in when the light is on, as some cars will remember the code, and some wont.

Go to the Auto Zone, they'll pull the diagnostic codes for you for free and give you a print out. They'll even give you an opinion as to whether it is a do it yourself job.
When you get the codes, go home and look them up at http://www.obdii.com/ to see what they mean.
If you end up having it serviced, then you can give them the codes and tell them exactly what to look for - this reduces the odds that they will try to rip you off.

what are you driving? If it comes on and stays on you can take it to an auto parts store and they can check it for you for free. I ask what you are driving because my pickup did the same thing and It ended up being something really simple

It's in the sending unit. that's all I know for sure. Don't know how to fix it. Have to take it to a dealer.
Ours is doing the same thing. If we find the problem tomorrow I will edit my answer.
Edit: we brought our mini van into the shop today. He told us not to worry about it. Still he didn't say what it was, just told us not to worry. So apparently it isn't too serious.
