Some people might not beleve this but a 4.3 l engine has all the same parts and componets as a 350 chevy onily it has two cylinders less. The can little power houses if done right but the one thing you need to remember that this is a computer controaled vehicle and with an engine up geade you also need to up grade the computer. for the larger engine. it will require mor aid and fuel now so this is a must its not all that expencive just time consuming i woul look at summit racing jegs or your local gm dealer for a towing chip it will gine you a big boost of power dont make the same mistake i did buy a chip if you dont the outcome is looking for a nother motor

I had an 89 4.3L. I'll tell you what I was told. "This engine is not designed to be anything special." GM designed it to be thier mid-model, cheap to make, engine block. With the amount of money you will throw into this engine, you will be better off just doing a complete swap. That's what I ending up doing and saving myself some problems in the long run. With all that work you want to do, a small-block v-8 will do it better and cheaper. Good luck with whatever you choose.
