Maintenance & Repairs - October 2006

The issue started with an oil leak, now resolved. But now my car is over heating and smells like coolant... as far as me and my boyfriend can tell there are no visible leaks, it takes about 15 minutes of driving for the fan to kick on and almost an hour for the engine to cool after driving only 20 minutes. how can i tell the differance between a broken thermostat, a blown head gasket or a hose leak? i cant afford any major repairs at a mechanic or a new car, please help!!!!

Awhile back I asked about a problem with my factory installed car alarm. After a couple of minutes with the doors being locked the alarm will go off by itself. Almost everyone said that it was a faulty door switch. The problem is, is that when I brought it in to get fixed, the shop said there was no way to determine which switch wasn't working properly. There was nothing they said they could do. Does this sound right? Is there any way to figure out which switch is giving me problems? Any other help would be greatly appreciated. Thank-You.

the battery had to be disconnected to recharge it, when connecting it up again i find the radio doesn't work. can i fix it?

I need a new radiator? I have a '95 Ford Ranger w/ almost 112K miles on it and I only "beat on it" when I'm on the highway and late for a doctor's appointment (meaning go like 90 mph). About 4 or 5 months ago, I flushed the radiator myself becuz the same thing was happening with the temp gauge needle. Then, it stopped. About 2 months ago, my friend and I put new brakes on the front and he put the calipers on wrong. I went to the shop cuz I had no brake pressure and they fixed his mistake. While there, I had the radiator flushed. About a week ago, I noticed the needle going up past the center half-way btw the center and "H." Then, it would go past the center towards "C." Up and down continuously. Since it started to get cold in Illinois, I've had the heat on full. When this is on, the needle stays in the center. Do I need a new thermostat or radiator? My friend said to get a stock thermostat. It hasn't been changed since I got the the truck at 89K miles and I don't know if ever b4 that.

does it really matter if you put regular or middle grade gas in your car. Will middle grade gas last longer and give more gas mileage than regular gas?

When I go to start my car the key won't budge, does this mean I need a new ignition? How much would this cost assuming I know someone to put it in for me for free? Also, my car has a special electronic chip on the key that I know nothing about. Maybe I just need a new key because this was damaged somehow?

I noticed that the top of the engine gets hot and the top radiator hose gets hot but about 3 inches from the radiator the hose is COLD, the radiator is COLD and all of the lower hoses to the water pump. Wanted to change the thermostat but found out it isn't so easy in this Jetta, it is buried under the Alternator and Power steering. Does anyone know does this sound like a Waterpump that has gone out. I don't see any coolant leaking and the belt is tight not squeeking. Do hear a rattle somewhere upfront. THe car starts up fine and runs good. I haven't tried to drive it though because it overheats right away. The car original overheated added water to get home. Drove it the next day about 15 miles started to overheat again. Had the radiator flushed at an oil and lube place. After the flush car overheated as soon as I pulled out of the oil change place.

i have a 99 dodge dakota, with aftermarket exhaust, when i start my truck it is jerking a idleing more than ever, like crazy pull my head back kinda jerk, it sounds really funny and acts like it doesnt get any power, after driving it a while it goes back to normal, kinda like all the sudden my rpms go up and i go flying unexpectedly. the brakes lock up pretty bad while it is havign its fits, and i think my bf thinks i am crazy b/c it is always fine when he gets ahold of it, the check engine light just came on, so at least i have some proof, help!!!

I have a friend down in Mexico that has a 93 mazda Protege he needs tha part wich is related with the car ignition ... he says it is the part that goes right after the key cylinder is the electronic part that has 4 terminals on one side and 2 on the other ..i called several places but they need the part name for any quotation so does any one Know about this ? I would appreciate it...thanks guys
Remember it is not where the key goes it's the next part .
