Undercoating and/or rustprooofing really isn't needed anymore on most new cars. In some cases, it may actually void the warranty on your new car, due to the holes they have to drill in the body of the car to get the rustproofing wands in. The factory corrosion protection that is already on your car when you buy it is designed to protect your new car for a long time. How long depends on what kind of car you are buying. I would look at what the factory warranty is for rust-through on the car- in many cases it's anything from 5 year 50,000 miles on. In any case, you should really have no need to rustproof or undercoat a new car.

If you live where harsh winters are a reality, undercoating is fabulous. It protects cars from the salt used on roads. I didn't bother with my old car and it fell apart much quicker than my current. If you plan on keeping your car for many years and salt is used on roads, I think it's worth it. It's not THAT expensive considering what an investment your car is.

For the most part no. Very seldom rust become a problem on a car for the first 10 years.

judging by your name i'd say you live on the eastern seaboard. you have much more problems with salt conditions than you will say in the middle of the country. it will help prevent rust if it is done properly and the undercoat is a high quality product. i have heard of unscrupulous retailers applying a product that amounts to nothing more than black spray paint.
caveat emptor (buyer beware)

It is good for your car but the dealer charges way too much . you can get the same spray that they use for 5 bucks at the auto store and do it yourself
