Maintenance & Repairs - August 2006

I have had my car for about 4 years, and I looked through my records and can't find a previous replacement of my front brakes. So it seems like it might have really been time to replace them, but I just wanted a knowledgeable person to let me know. I already read the answer given to Starlicious, but it didn't say how often replacement is usually needed.

I've taken my car to various mechanics and they all fix it. It is not great but it works.... however, three weeks to a month later we are in the same situation whith no air conditioning. Every time I take it to the mechanic they want to charge me for some part I've never really heard of. At this point I think the tubes have a leek but I'm tired of paying for nothing!.. Hope someone can help!. I'll really appresiate it. Florida is incredibly hot in the summer!

I have a 2000 chevy s-10 that was running very poorly. When I was driving the engine started reving so I pulled over and had my brother come look at it. He didb't figure out what was wrong with it, but drove it back to my house since we were close and it would only go about 15 mph before it would start reving. After getting it home and parking I got in to get it closer to the curb and the check engine light came on. I took it to an old frined of mine who owns a shop, and so far he has told me that all four cylinders are misfiring and that he is getting and o2 code. He hasn't had much time to play with it and I told him to take his time, since I won't have the money to get it for a couple of weeks anyway. Has anyone else had something similar to this happen to them, I am curious as to what the problem is and how much it will end up costing (round abouts anyway on the cost). To help narrow it down he said it was not the cat and I have good compression. Timong Belt replaced in March 05

My mechanic told me I need to replace it after I went to him with a very loud roaring sound coming from the engine/under the car. He said it is the pipe that connects to the manifold.

How do you know if you need a new EGR valve or if you just need to clean it?

My car has recently started making a ticking noise which sounds like a fast clock - and it seems that the ticking speeds up and slows down in time with the speed of my car. My passenger and I also noticed today that it stops when I turn my wheels to corner and then starts again as soon as the wheels are fully straightened. Do you know what this could be and how much it will probably be to have repaired? Also would this have been showing in April as I've only had the car since then and I want to know if the dealer would have been able to tell that the part was worn. I am planning to get this checked out at a garage, but would just appreciate some idea of whats going on and how urgent this is. Thanks.

My car has 54000 miles on it. Mostly short trips (city driving). I've never done this on other cars. I'm planning to keep the car for about 3 more years and don't really want to sink a lot of money into it, unless it's a safety issue. What do you think? The service would cost me about $900.

it shifts from first to second ok, but when it tries to shift from second to third, it acts like its in neutral. revving the engine then makes it kick back into second and it will remain there. it will not try to shift up again. what could be the problem?

But the bad part of it is we have races this weekend and the graffiti is really pretty bad. The sides of the trailer are black aluminum and they are very flexible we don't have time to paint it. Does anyone know any solvents that they know may work we have used many things. I am open to all serious suggestions! Please help us!! Keep in mind that it can't ruin the paint because preferably we don't want to repaint it. I need to know before Friday night!! THANK YOU!
