My car has 54000 miles on it. Mostly short trips (city driving). I've never done this on other cars. I'm planning to keep the car for about 3 more years and don't really want to sink a lot of money into it, unless it's a safety issue. What do you think? The service would cost me about $900.

I think you'll be fine. My SUV has way over 150000 miles on it, all kinds of driving.. I was told by a mechanic once that I needed to have my shocks and struts replaced, and as old as my vehicle is (1992) he was probably telling the truth.

But I didn't do it, and that was 2 years ago. If you are really concerned about this then get a second opinion. Do not tell the second mechanic what the first one said, just ask if he can do an overall check of your vehicle to see what needs work done.

Even if he does say that your shocks are bad though I personally wouldn't bother with it since you're going to get rid of your van in a few years anyways.

You can test your shocks yourself you don't have to have a second opinion, go up to your car and go to one of the corners and push down on it three or four times in a row and then watch car and see if it bounces after your done, it should only bounce a half to a full bounce if it moves anymore then that they are bad. Go to each corner and check them. If they are real bad and you are going to keep it for 3 more years then it would be well worth it to have them fixed because they will wear out your tires allot faster. You are right at the limit for changing shocks, 50000 is the mileage for shocks.

if you buy them from ebay will cost you less I bought the four of them for 70 dlls. The cost service is too high. you should find someone who charges less. And having old or need shocks has nothing to do with safety, is comfortability. Is like a bed. If you have a new mattres you will sleep more comfortable, but it does not matter if it is new or old you will be able to sleep anyway.
My advice is don't replace them if you are planing to keep it less then 5 years.

Get a second opinion and don't tell them what has been suggested by the first mechanic.... Just tell them you want the shocks and struts looked at to make sure there are no problems for your future driving...

Get several more opinions, ask them to test drive it and then see what they say. Some shocks and struts that have not been driven hard will still have life in them at 54,000 miles. Get more than one opinion and then decide, get several if you can.

about every 50000 miles you need to do this. You could ask the mechanics at askautopro.com

I would take care of the car if possible. It will last longer.
