Having more spark means burning all the fuel that enters the chamber. It doesn't really do all that much good to have an amplifier, if you don't spread that spark out with a cross-fire. A 98 Ford Ranger with a 4 Cylinder will get better gas mileage than a 99 Ford Ranger with a 6 Cylinder, because the 4 Cylinder has two spark plugs for every chamber. This means the spark is spread out and starts the burn in two places within the chamber. This ensures all the fuel is burnt.

Now, as for the MSD Amplifier, having a bigger spark on one spark plug doesn't really do anything except make for a hotter spark and waste of electrical power. Now, if you're talking about getting spark plugs that are gapped much higher, then an amplifier is needed. This will ensure better burning as well, because the spark will be longer. But it's the two situations(higher gap AND amplification) combined that make for better fuel efficiency. These things also cause the spark plug wires to go bad much faster and the rotor on the distributor will corrode faster. Higher voltage=more resistance=more heat in the wires

and more fuel burn equates to easier starting, better throttle response and more consistant burn at high rpms (whish is the main reason people buy it, or unless they are replacing a very old system).
