I have heard that there is a sort of theory test and then a driving test for internationals wishing to drive in US if they are permanently based there. How would you go about taking this test/learning for it, what difference is there in the cars over there (other than being the opposite side!). thanks!

I'm in a country where the standard is Manual Transmissions. I have an Automatic Tranny. I seem to find myself braking more often than standards. Am i braking too much? If so, how do i prevent this? Should I punch it to "2" or turn off overdrive so that i drop a gear?

I just feel like I use my brakes more than I should.

i.e. what's the impulse behind rubbernecking? also it doesnt have to be a car wreck. it could simply be flashing cop lights or anything really on the side of the road that people seem to be fascinated with. anyway its annoying because it slows the flow of traffic down. why doesnt anyone care about slowing traffic down to s standstill because they're so obsessed with something on the side of the road. the most annoying part is when the "happening" is on the other side of the freeway! ugh.

If it doesn't matter what level the fan is on, then it would be better to blow the A/C on high till it gets really cool then turn it off to save gas.

I have been hearing more and more about this whole deal with ethanol. I just don't understand all the hype. Earlier this year I heard from a Science teacher at my school (He is a former college professor that has retired and came back to teach high school) that even if The United States made a serious commitment to ethanol, it still wouldn't be a good idea. He said that if we grew ethanol producing crops on every square inch of land in The U.S., we still wouldn't produce enough ethanol to fuel the entire country. Surely the government realizes that? Why can't we just use Hydrogen? It seems so much more practical because it is more combustable than gasoline and it only produces water as a by-product. Hydrogen also seems to be better than ethanol. As far as I can tell, the only downside to Hydrogen fuel is building stong enough fuel tanks; but that seems an easy enough task. What can I possibly be missing?

In the commercial these fuzzy, sweet characters are being interviewed to tell this lady what they think about this car. They start saying things like "it doesnt make me feel fuzzy inside" and stuff like that. Then they ask so what do you think? and this brown fuzzy character says "to tell you the truth, it scares the BEEP out of me" ya know they bleep it out or whatever. So then they say"thats exactly what we wanna hear" But i cant remember what the car was that the commercial was advertising for??? can you help???

Hey- I just got a job in the Sunnyvale/Mtn View area and am wondering what are the best places to live in the bay area assuming the following...

- my wife does not have a job yet but will likely be working in SF or the east bay
- we have no kids and are in our mid-30s
-we want to rent apartment to start (~$3K/month or so rent?) or house?
- I'm good to communte (~45mins each way) via train, bus, combo of the bus+train, or, if necessary, drive
- we're not interested in living in an area with endless tract homes--we want to live somewhere fun with character!

Follow-up ?: How feasible is it to live in SF proper given commuting to the valley and cost of living?

Thanks!

you still continually drive 20 mph over the speed limit? you still drive vehicles that get poor mileage, but yet you say 3$ a gallon gas is killing you?? if it really was you would change your bad habits! so obviously you all have deep pockets and the oil companies know that you will not change unless gas gets to 5$ a gallon. so look for prices to stay 3 to 4 bucks a gallon from now on!!!!!!!!
