i.e. what's the impulse behind rubbernecking? also it doesnt have to be a car wreck. it could simply be flashing cop lights or anything really on the side of the road that people seem to be fascinated with. anyway its annoying because it slows the flow of traffic down. why doesnt anyone care about slowing traffic down to s standstill because they're so obsessed with something on the side of the road. the most annoying part is when the "happening" is on the other side of the freeway! ugh.

I'm glad 2 know I'm not the only 1 asking that ? Here's some feedback I got:
* it may be a relative or someone I know involved in the incident
* just being nosy
* if I drive slow enough I might be on TV 2night
* I have all this spare time; let me hold up the people who have to go to work
And where is it written as law u have to slow down when you see the police? I mean if you're @ and not above speed limit why should 1 reduce speed. There is a law for reducing speed when the weather is bad yet that's when commuters speed and drive more wrecklessly.

The law says that you have to slow down when you see a cop with flashing lights on the side of the road. These people are just obeying the law. But, I agree with you- it does get annoying!!

Well you and I know it's safety. Debris and many of car crash materials could spread all over the place if you're going on a high speed (even if you're on the other side of the freeway). That can affect/effect the investigation of the crash and it will somehow cause more traffic/ problems. If it's a small car bump that can cause accident, be aware of it. More traffic means getting even more late of being somewhere else. That'd ruin everything!

I look to see if anyone's died or to see if it's something worth getting a photo of.

Also, if it's on the other side of the freeway, it's a good idea to slow down in case another emergency vehicle uses your side of the road or cuts through one of those no u turn spots to get to the scene faster .

It's a good idea to slow down because you never know if something on the other side of the road could potentially affect you and because everyone else is going to be paying attention to it as well. Take it in stride and take a gander yourself and you might learn something.

If it is on the same side you are driving on you need to slow down or at least get in the farthest lane away. Many people are nosy anyway and want to try to figure out what is going on and see if they know anyone.

It is human nature to be curious.You look for a moment sometimes without realizing that you have slowed down a bit.

I'm sure you do the same. It's our human psychology to KNOW what's going on and why we were slowed down...
