I have heard that there is a sort of theory test and then a driving test for internationals wishing to drive in US if they are permanently based there. How would you go about taking this test/learning for it, what difference is there in the cars over there (other than being the opposite side!). thanks!

After doing UK test/driving there for 28yrs, Florida test was a total joke. Motorcycle 'test' even worse joke. just go there and do it.
testing eyesight is a good idea though, and licence only lasts 6 yrs (in florida, not sure about rest of US)

I'm a US bloke living in the UK (Cambridge) and if you can pass the UK test, you'll do fine.
As a matter of fact, I feel sorry for you. Driving in the US is a mess compared to driving over here.

Differences I can think of are :

Right Turn on RED lights unless otherwise indicated by a sign.
People have the right of way in/near roads - ALWAYS.
You can pass cars on either side and bnot be thought of as being rude.
You can drive slow in the "fast lane" - the LEFT lane in the States.
In the US setting your parking break everytime you come to a stop is considered WIERD.
The boot is called the trunk.
Tyre = Tire in the States.
Rims are usually covered under some car insurance policies.
You ca nget tire insurance from garages.
Your car insurance poly usually includes a car care package (towing, roadside assist).

You can take sample DMV test online. This doesn't cover the driving part, but those are usally very simple.

it's easy to take pass the test. these are things they will test you on the hands on part: 3 point turn, parallel parking, signaling (changing lanes, turning) hands on both wheels. looking left or right before turning. that's it. on the test part, it's just the rules and regulation some of them common sense like stopping on a rght turn to give a truck way for turning right. you'll make it man. try to take the test on a small town, not LA or other big cities in california. it will help you more. just google the practice test for california DMV, they have it available online too. if you want i can give you a copy of the practice test.
