It's german.
The name comes from the family of Turn und Taxis (which still exists), that had a royal courrier concession, which latter evolved into local transport for people.

According to Wikipedia; Taxi is an abbreviation of taximeter which is the device which measures the distance traveled and indicates the fare due. The "taxi" in "taximeter" is originating from the Greek word TAXIDEYO meaning to travel. The mechanical taximeter was invented by German Wilhelm Bruhn in 1891.
Petrol powered taxis began operating in Paris in 1899, in London in 1903, and in New York in 1907. The New York taxis were imported from France by businessperson Harry N. Allen, who adapted the French word taxi-mètre and coined the word "taxicab" to describe the vehicles he was importing. In time, the shortened term "taxi" came into common usage. Allen was also the first person to paint his taxis yellow, after learning that yellow is the colour most easily seen from a distance.

Well, taxi is written in English on most taxis, but may have their own words, like in Hong Kong, it is 的士"Dek Si", but then again it's the transliterated prononciation since there are many words in the Cantonese language that are borrowed from English, while Mandarin it's 計程車"Ji Chen Chuh".
