My mechanic says reason my crank sensor broke on my suburu is because I was only using regular gas; he says need to use high octane on suburus or it is common for the crank / knock sensor to break. Does this sound right?

I just heard from my friend who drives a VW that all VWs can only run on preminum gas because german gas is different and if I put the cheapest lowest grade in it will break my engine. Is this true? I really hope not with gas prices what they are.

To any mechanics out there, specifically Volkswagon specialists, how do VW's today rate to VW's of fifteen years ago? Are they more cheaply made? I am looking to buy a bug, but many people have told me not to because they are peices of junk. My parents love WV and have always bought this brand, but they have had quite a few problems with the lest few.....

Where can I find one? How much do they cost, and how much repairs would have to be done? I'd say I would be extremely dedicated to getting one to work.

Why do the "green" people who make all the lists about the most "green" cars not mention Volkswagen's diesel engines? I own a Passat TDI and I get about 50MPG. Yet i never see anyone talking about the fact that VW has some of the most efficient cars on the market.. And they will outperform any Toyota or Honda hybrid (acceleration and handling) and last a lot longer because the TDI engine is nothing short of bullet proof. At the VW dealer I go to they have plaques with odometers and they are all over 1 million kilometers. Any ideas???
By the way, many car companies now have plans to offer small diesel engines like VW.

Initially it was thought to be the middle section containing the baffles which had broken down. Original symptoms occur with replacement. Catalytic convertor also replaced.
The question is directed at a VW Passat.
