I have a 2003 VW Jetta - I don't see the regular "ball" hitch on the back center - but to the right of that there is a flat circular ring... is that a different kind of hitch?

No, it is probably a tie down point for transporting the vehicle. If there is no ball or a square opening in the center rear there is no trailer hitch.

Why on Earth would you want to tow anything with a Jetta?

If there is no receiver on the back -- then no -- there no hitch.

There are two basic hitches, the one you described and a pentel hitch, which receives a round eye hook.

Do not tow with your car...it is not in the best interest of your cars transmission nor your wallet...
