To any mechanics out there, specifically Volkswagon specialists, how do VW's today rate to VW's of fifteen years ago? Are they more cheaply made? I am looking to buy a bug, but many people have told me not to because they are peices of junk. My parents love WV and have always bought this brand, but they have had quite a few problems with the lest few.....

I wonder, do any of these judgmental people actually OWN a VW New Beetle? I do. I have a 98'. I love it. Some of them have problems, but not any more than average.

In my opinion VW’s today are much better built then the earlier ones but just like any vehicle from years ago you need to compare apples to apples.

Are they cheaply made? We ask for better and better gas mileage so all vehicles are getting lighter and lighter, more and more plastics and different materials are used today that we never used in the past.

VW’s like the Bug have their share of problems from the headliners coming loose, brake vibrations, audio problems, paint problems, transmission problems and the list goes on.

VW’s for the most part are in the group of vehicles that are built better but the flip side is that they are going to cost you much more to repair.

New ones unfortunately are rather low quality. They are famous for reliability issues. The new Bug is nothing more than a Bug shell on an Audi TT.

They have betrayed their early fans by making cars that are difficult to work on.

the new v.w.'s are the wrong side of horrible they are poorly engineered and built out of shoddy materials. they are very time consuming to repair [labor intensive] compare timing belt replacement times to even a kia rio an average tech can do 2 1/2 kia's to one v.w. beetle timing belt and the rest of v.w.'s model line follows suit also they are still plagued with finiky engine managment woe's the engines will hold up if maintained but you will always be in the shop for somthing.

Their build quality has definitely improved there reliability is not as high as Toyota or Honda but your must trade off the build quality and solid feel of a German car for the others. I say get the VW
