Pre-WW2 Nazi Germany.

Literally translated Volkswagen = Peoples Car (an affordable vehicle). The "Beetle" was designed pre WW2 to be this "peoples car".

It had a "bolt on chassis" and this enabled the floorpan to be utilised for military purpose by fixing a different body onto it.

Thus the german army staff car - Kubelwagen - was in place.

And of course, the Feuhrer also commissioned the Autobahn - the first multi lane highway in the world.

Oh how he was slated then - but in fairness, he did have some ideas way ahead of his time.

Pretty much everybody above is correct...

VOLKS means people, but WAGEN means "dare"....

Hitler was responsible for the creation of the car.... it was to be an inexpensive car that nearly anybody could afford and simple and cheap to run, operate, own and fix....

The only thing I have to add is this website:

http://www.vvwca.com/features/people/

It tells about the people behind the car. I thought it was pretty interesting.
