I can't afford a new hybrid so a friend wants to give me his 1970 VW microbus which should get better mileage than my Mercury.. Anybody have experience with old VWs? It has the 1600cc engine. What fuel mileage did you get with yours? Gas down here in south FL is $3 per gallon!

What on God's green earth can I use? It needs to be pliable and funky. An ideal material would be a 'baize' like substance. Would acoustic carpet be an option?

This is in relation to the new bulbs which contain xenon gas - there can be single filament (where a shutter switches between high & low beam) of dual filament (where there are effectively 2 bulbs.... I'm looking to purchase some of these new bulbs, cheers

Okay, so I know that some people have dubbed this as the ugliest car ever invented...but I just LOVE these cars! I have seen some that were restored, and some that have not at a couple of VW shows that I have been to. I am willing to get one that is ugly on the outside, but runs on the inside to start out. I am also in Germany right now. Any thoughts?

I've had the transmission oil changed, and checked the linkage, but still have intermittent trouble selecting 1st and 2nd gear, mostly from a cold start. At what point do I know that a new gearbox is the answer? Obviously I want to know for sure what the problem is before spending out a large sum of money. Is there a common fault on these vans? Can anyone recommend a garage to make some checks, or a gearbox reconditioner, in the south of England? Thanks.

Never any problems, had the car since new with low mileage (just surpassed 50k, but for my last oil change i had them put in a synthetic blend. Since then, my check engine comes and goes intermittently.

mostly it stays on, but it will go off for a day or two then come back on for a week or so.

I know, i know(!) there are many many reasons why this light comes on, but anyone have think there might be a correlation?
