Stratified Diesel Injection
The difference between a SDi and a TDi is that the SDi is normally aspirated and the TDi has a turbo and is therefore more powerful.
A 1.9 SDi puts out approx 70bhp. A 1.9TDi will put out between 90 and 150bhp depending on the size of turbo.
SDi engines are used for the entry level cars that don't have very many options. Go for the TDi. They're eminently better.

It actually has several meanings but i don't know which one is correct
In german they call it: Saug Diesel Direkt Einspritzung
SDI= Super Diesel Intercharger
SDI= Soft Diesel Injection
SDI engines produce less Bhp than a TDI engine, if you want more power you should get a TDI because an SDI has no match for TDI engines due that TDI engines are far more powerfull. In a TDI the outside air doesn't get sucked in but gets pumped through the Turbo where the T stands for, the TDI engines burn the dieselconsumption at a higher pressure which makes the engines quieter and softer and more powerfull then an SDI engine
nashi078: Yes i just didn't know what the actual meaning was for SDI in english nor do i have a book about it but i knew what it meant in german, not many golfs use an SDI but there aren't many people who want an SDI engine either due to the lack of power and because it has no turbo, most SDI golfs i have seen driving around have 68Bhp and most TDI'S at the 1.9Litre range between 90-150Bhp

Your mechanic was presumably bitten by a Golf at some time. All cars can have their bad times but the Golf has fewer than most. I have just replaced the cat on a 10 year old Golf. that's pretty good going. It cost £130 from Micheldever Tyres, a Fiesta cat from them costs just over £250. It has 90000 miles on the clock and runs very well indeed - returning a mixed milage of about 45-50 mpg. As for oil consumption. they're no worse than any other providing that they've been looked after. If the previous owner thrashed it then you can certaily expect increased oil consumption. You should get about 8000 miles/litre at least from a 62000 mile car. Don't buy a GTi from a "boy racer". No "water consumption". I've never heard of the term "soft engine". The body shell and other mechanical bits should be almost as sound as new on a well maintained 60000 mile car. You should check to see that the cam-belt has been replaced. If it hasn't then you must be prepared to pay a lot of money to have it done fairly soon. This will apply to any make of car of that milage except for those with a chain driven camshaft. Cam-belt failure is always expensive and will almost certainly destroy the engine. If it happens on a motorway then the car could stop dead without warning. Use your imagination and remember what you've seen crunched into the crash barriers. Don't risk being one of them. Toyotas are always good and reliable. You should have no trouble with those. Insurance is often lower than comparible cars too. Don't touch any Ford with a barge pole. They are less well built than almost anything else except Fiats and spares are often more expensive than VW or Toyota (they used to be cheap to repair but that was decades ago). The company no longer builds in the UK, Their dealer training and customer service is, frankly, bloody awful. Any complaint results in a reply congratulating you on your Ford! Fiats are just cheap rattly poorly ergonomic, unrelaible rubbish that will give you a bad back after sitting in one for more than an hour.

ps batista_…if you actually get a volkswagen study pack ,a book that the vw master techs learn from, volkswagen state that sdi means stratified diesel injection. maybe other companies say it means different things, so far enough but the question was about volkswagen golfs
