I'll go you one better. Get a 2.0 litre Type IV engine from a late Transporter, 411, 412, or Porsche 914. With some fairly easy mods, you can convert it to upright fan & stuff it right in.

Virtually ALL of the VW air cooled beetle engines are interchangeable in the physical sense. BUT there are other things to remember

1) Early models were 6 volt systems. If you switch them into a 12v car you will need to change the generator to an alternator. Likewise there are small electronic parts that need to be upgraded (electric chokes etc..)

2) Early models had significantly less power then the last of the aircooled beasts. There is no really good reason to use them as far as I can see unless you have no other choice.

3) Some of the newer engines had different smog hookups. You can likely live without them but you need to make sure.

othewise.. mixing and matching works just fine.

Stuff the VW motors. Look around to see if you can find a 2litre Lancia engine from the 70s. It's a great mod. You'll have to do the breaks (new AA authorized spelling) and suspension too.

17,16,15,13 and why would you want to go any smaller/older?Thats for VW engines that go in fairly easily. (I got a V8 in mine 283CID which did not go in easily.)
