You will need to change the generator stand to an alternator stand and install an internally regulated alternator...the red wire will still be pos+ and the blue will still be the Field wire..
Be sure to replace the oil baffle under the Alt stand and use
a gasket on top and below the baffle...also be sure the fan that mounts to the alt is tight and the wave washer is installed cup side up and that the fan clears the backing plate and also that the fan belt is adjust to the proper deflection...The shims for the Alt pulley go on the inside and outside of the pulley to adjust for proper tension, be sure to use all the shims

As someone else pointed out.. there are a lot of changeovers that make this an easy but time consuming task.

I would suggest that you wait for now and when you get ready to re-build the engine, or need to replace the clutch, that you simply upsize the engine to a late model - that way you will get more horsepower AND a 12v system intact and you won't have to mess with the engine components like alternator stand and cooling fan issues.

Changing the lightbulbs is easy (switch your headlights to the H4 types at the same time.. same cost - better light). Don't forget all those little dash lights.. go to a wrecking yard and canabalize a late model VW for most of the stuff. You can also pull a wiper motor from one (or buy one off ebay) and swap it out with yours - a knuckle scratcher but easy enough to do.. everyting else should be simple (don't forget the relays for turn signals AND high/low beams).

Like someone said.. the cost is sometimes high, but the end product is a car that will allow you to upgrade radios, use accessories etc.. and that is more then handy.

.

good luck

Don't forget that you're going from 6 volts to 12. You'll need to change out all of your bulbs & accessories to 12 volt, & get a resistor for the wiper motor, as a 12-volt motor won't bolt into your '63.

Change your relay-based regulator to a solid-state one - should smooth things out!

unless you're needing the amps to power your sound, stick with the generator, save half the cash.
