I have been asked to advise my girlfriend's mother on a replacement for her 7 year old Citroen Xsara 1.6 hatchback. Having only owned one car (a mighty Volvo 340!) which I inherited I havent had much experience of buying and selling so can anyone recommend a suitable replacement for the Xsara. She has £5-6,000 to spend and wants a 5door hatch, the younger the better. She does about 10,000 miles a year mostly local but some motorway driving.

Some of the cars I thought are the Citroen C4 (obvious but not sure we'd get one in price range?), Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 307, but are there any others in the price range? VW Golf? Japanese makes for example?

I am in the market for a used car (2006 Pontiac G6). The one I am looking at has just been reduced but I want it at a lower price. I am terrible at negotiating. Should I let the salesman know about other offers? Play hardball? Give me some suggestions.

the car has around 165,000 miles with very minor outside scratches, needs a water pump and timing belt, runs good and has been well cared for. Over all it is in very good condition. What should be a good offer for a car like this?

Hey, I've been wanting to get a car, but I don't know how to start, where to start. If I go to a bank (I have 0 credit) will they still give me a loan? And second, should I apply at dealerships for credit? I'm looking for a small vehicle around 2-6k just to drive to work. I drive my parent's truck but its a V8, gas is killing. And I work part time, how does all this affect me? Thx!

Have American cars gotten any better? I can buy one of several 2005 Ford Taurus SEL for $ 9985 with around 21,000 miles. I was originally looking for a Camry or Accord. But for $10,000 I can only find 1996 to 2000 with over 80,000 miles on them. So the question: Is an almost brand new Taurus with new car smell, perfect interior and factory warranty going to be more reliable than a 8 year old Japanese car with worn seat, dirty carpets and used engine?.

Making the decision on a new car and have narrowed it down to VW Golf Comfortline 2.0 FSI and Honda Civic Sport, however am concerned about the on-going prices for maintaining these cars and can't find any information. Can anyone give me info on the costs associated with either of these cars such as repairs, regular servicing, etc? Some people suggest that the VW would be more expensive but I can't find any info to support this.

I'm trying to estimate what my monthly payments would be, I am using the carmax payment calculator but I don't know what percentage to use. I'm using 6.5%, not sure what it will actually be. Is it based on your income, credit score, or contract length (24-72 months)??

at $10552. Is this a good bargain and do you think I can afford to maintain the car. The cost of fuel is too high, how is the car when it comes to fuel consumption.
