I have been asked to advise my girlfriend's mother on a replacement for her 7 year old Citroen Xsara 1.6 hatchback. Having only owned one car (a mighty Volvo 340!) which I inherited I havent had much experience of buying and selling so can anyone recommend a suitable replacement for the Xsara. She has £5-6,000 to spend and wants a 5door hatch, the younger the better. She does about 10,000 miles a year mostly local but some motorway driving.
Some of the cars I thought are the Citroen C4 (obvious but not sure we'd get one in price range?), Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot 307, but are there any others in the price range? VW Golf? Japanese makes for example?

➔ Buying & Selling
Hello! First of all, my sister bought a C4 a year ago and absolutely loves it, great cars, however, I don't think there are any in that price range yet.
I would recommend two cars. My first nominee is the Renault Mégane. It's a real comfortable, well equipped, safe car with great engines. There's anything from the economical 1.5 dCi diesel to the mad F1 Team version. I recently went to buy a Mégane, but the sale fell through. It was a 2003 Privilège model. It had Cream leather, twin sunroofs etc and was only £5,995. So, a younger, lesser equipped model could be had in your price range, features would still include auto wipers and lights, and doors that lock when you drive off (No hijackings).
The next car is the Peugeot 1007. This car has not sold as much as Peugeot had hoped, so used prices are now very cheap. You could get a 2005 version for £5,995... which would have cost £11,000 new! It has electric sliding doors, very easy access! It's also very economical and easy to drive, as well as being safe and having most of the Mégane's features. You mentioned the 307...a great car!
I would not recommend the Astra, too common, badly equipped and expensive.
Good luck with the purchase anyway.

I have replaced a gearbox and a couple of clutches on my cars without a ramp and let me tell you, it is a back breaking job. I do not advise you do go ahead with the repair on your own with no proper tools or expertise. you will more than likely have to remove the gear box, which means partially removing your drive shafts, undoing all of the gearbox mounts (which some are often shared with engine mounts), which means you will then need some trolley jacks, one to hold up your engine and one to hold up your gear box. All the bell housing nuts will need to be taken out and the gear box to be dropped out of position, which, if you do not have a proper ramp so you can stand underneath the car is one hell of a job. Especially with most cars where the gear box has the diff at the rear of the box, it then takes a lot of wiggling to remove the gear box. The easy part is getting it all off, the hard parts are remembering how it all goes back together and getting the gear box back onto the engine. Get professional help if possible.

C4 is rather new and rather pricey.
How about the C5? Serious motoring luxury for reasonable money, and has the "magic carpet" Hydractive suspension that Citroen is famous for. Get the 2.2HDi if possible. Plenty of grunt and amazing economy.

Try looking at the Top Gear website at http://www.topgear.com/
They compared these cars. I am going to get the Town & Country when it comes out.
Good Luck!

A Reliant Robin would be a good swap, for you that is.
