I am considering buying a Toyota Prius. The sticker price is $23,000. I will have 10% ($2,300) down payment. I don't have the best credit. How much can I reasonibly expect the salesman to lower the price? This will be my first new car. I live in cntral NC.

I am plannig on buying a new car. The am really considering the Prius because I want a Hybrid and it has the best mpg. I drive a lot and with the cost of gas I need something with a high mpg to help absorb the cost of a car payment (my current car is paid for). I hope that makes sense.

Go to http://toyota.com and click on "request a quote". This will allow you to submit a price quote to local dealers in your area. Most dealers now have internet departments that will give you a reasonable discount without haggling. You may be able to get an even better price by going in and haggling the old fashioned way, but you can still use the internet price as a starting point.
Another resource is http://carsdirect.com, they have an automated system that will allow you to build and price a car and immediately get a true sales price (not just the MSRP). They are essentially a car broker so any local dealer should be able to at least match their price.

I would suggest you rethink your options. Everybody wants a hybrid because they think they are a good thing. They are not ready for prime time yet, but the Prius is probably the closest. As everybody wants them, the prices are not being discounted. Think more in the line of a Yaris. You might even save a few bucks, and they get really good fuel mileage. Your resale in three, four or five years will be much better too.

Before you bury yourself in a Prius, remember, the most expensive part of the Hybrid car is the battery. Which, as a replacement part, on some models, costs more than the car. Who will buy these cars used, when they are getting closer to that battery change & who wants a car w/no resale value plus a huge maintenance item like that?

If you check the ads, at least in this area Toyota is actually offering discounts on the Prius because they are finally in front of demand. I got no discount on mine when I bought it in December, but at the time no dealer had a Prius on the lot for sale. The only way I got to see the car was to see one that someone else had ordered but hadn't picked up yet.
Your best bet is to go to the dealer and check. It costs nothing to go in and look and talk to the salesperson.

It really depends on how badly they want to sell the car. If it's a fast selling car then they probably won't budge. If it's been there for several months they'll probably want to get rid of it asap. You need to shop around for the best deal. There are some websites out there that will give you price quotes. Try searching "automotive price quotes".

It's rare that the sticker price is the actual selling price.Salesmen are obviously in it for the money.They will lower the price to where they get a nice commission and still give you a better deal..It comes down to them settling for a smaller profit.

On a Prius, don't expect a dime in discounts. Locally they're selling at about a 5% premium over sticker. If you can buy one for the sticker price, you've done very well indeed.
