I'm 21. Made under 5000 last year. If my mom claims me as a dependent can I still file and get my return?

Okay. Heres my situation. I'm currently 21, a student, and plan on filing taxes for the first time. I live away from home in an apartment. I worked alot last summer and did work study during the fall. My aunt told me I should file to get some money back and I should tell my mom not to claim me because I've supported myself for over two years.

Heres my question: My main concern is getting the most financial aid I can get. I have 1 more year left and 3 of my scholarships are done after this year. I really need all the grant money I can get. Whats the best strategy for this? Should I file as an independent or let my mom claim me? Should I even bother filing? I made a decent amount over the summer but work study pays min. wage.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I recieved 2 checks this period, one was my regular salary paycheck, and another was a slightly higher bonus check.

On the paycheck the federal government took out 6%, and the state took out 1%. On the bonus check the government took out 25% and the state took out 6%!! I was so dissapointed to see this bonus check, which was supposed to be a reward nearly cut in half! Why was the tax percentage on the bonus check so much higher than my regular paycheck?

I'm going to have to pay my own taxes since I'm a 1099 contract employee. Is gas mileage reimbursement taxable since I'm already being paid for it, or would I just tax my regular hourly rate?

I'm looking to start a business doing taxes and want to set my fees at 50% less than H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. I can't find a detailed list of their per form charges.

im not sure which route i should take when filing my taxes, i made way less than 30,000 in 2006 im married have a 1 year old and owned a house all of 2006 and my wife only worked 1 month in 2006, should i file as head of householdif i can since my wife did work for a month? can i qualify for earned income credit? can i file head of household and get earned income credit? whats the difference and can we still file either one as a filing jointly? also if i decide to do the head of household (if you guys think thats the way to go) is that possible to do on an online tax service like taxslayer.com which lets you file for free if your military which i am, im just confused on wether i should do it online since its free or blow 100 bucks at a taxpreparer when i think i have a pretty straight forward tax filing. how do you guys think i should file and were? i really really appreciate your responses in advance.

I only owned the house a few months, so it's a short-term gain, I assume, but it seems against the purpose of the investment rules, because my investment started with the sales contract at 15K down in 9/03. So, my investment was held over two years. It seems in the spirit of long-term gain, if within the letter of short-term gain.
Any way around the settlement date being the date the investment commenced?

I made $18k last year and paid $4k in taxes and my parents are probably going to file their taxes with me as being one of their dependents. Can I still file taxes and will that leave me with less of a refund if they also file as me as their dependant?

I work from home as a medical transcriptionist. I bought my laptop to finish my online schooling, and for work. I got it in June 2006, and started working in November. I have the reciept. The total cost, with tax, the carrying case and product protection plan, was around $1700. What I am able to claim?

My bankruptcy was discharged in March and wanted to know is there a way not to give up my tax returns. My husband's hours has been drastically reduced and i'm starting school on the 6th of feb. I really would like to pay for my classes and books instead of taking out more loans. Does the court have to take both federal and state. Or is there a certain amount. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few months ago I recieved a letter from the IRS saying that my tax return from 2004 I had a typo in the federal tax witheld portion of the 1040 and the amount differed from one of my former employer. Now the IRS is saying I owe them $2400 in back taxes.

I was really looking forward to this years refund becuase i am sooooooooooooooooooo broke and need it ASAP. But now when I do my taxes next week I know the IRS automaticlly taxes the balance out leaving me with nothing.

Is there any ANY way at all to get around this issue. Im 27 and financially destitute. If it turns out I need to pay that $2400 I will pay it over time but not right now. Can someone give me help. And also What would a estimated refund be for someone whos single, 27 y.o, and has a business and dependents. I did some calculation and came up with $3200 but I wanted to know if other people thought that sounds right my estimated gross this year was $36,000
