For Federal taxes you can get deductions if you have children, go to school...etc. But what are some deductions you can claim for state taxes?

My DH and I had an estimate done this week with HR Block , and we would like to know if any one knows about how accurate those estimates usually are, either those or the ones that you can do your self online. I'd appreciate any feed back, thanks!

This is my first year doing my taxes. It was a pain I went over everything a zillion times and had other people look too. Grand total of 3,753.00 federal. 7.00 state. Total of 3760.
I never thought I would have gotten that much! But I do have a son, qualified for EIC, and some donation deductions.

I'm happy

I have two questions about the sales tax deduction. My husband is in the Navy and he does not pay State Taxes (we line in IL) only Federal. My understanding about the sales tax deduction is that I have two choices, I can either deduct our state taxes (which we don't have) or I can add up all my sales tax for purchases for the year and pick which one I want to deduct. Of course, we do not pay state taxes so I would choose to add up my receipts and take the deduction. Is this the correct understanding? My second question is, I use coupons alot and sometimes my coupon savings dip into the sales tax. For example my sales tax on my receipt is 2.50 but my actual total is 1.25. Do I use the original sales tax or do I use the actual total since it is lower than the sales tax?

Any idea how much would be owed on the $5000 and if my SSD is about $16,500 + hubby's income is about $36k and we take standard deductions, what's the additional tax we'll have to pay on my SSD (which in most years his income is not enough to cause to be taxed--or it's minimal)---The bottom line, is it worth it to claim this prize (a trip for 2) or will our additional tax burden make it a less attractive trip for us. Thanks for your help.

I have a 1099 misc from one of my employers with no taxes taken out. When trying to complete my return, my adjusted gross income is correct, but my Earned Income Credit is not. The EIC is not counting the income from the 1099. The tax that I have to pay is correct, but not EIC. Any input is appreciated.

My husband and I recently purchased a property in Texas and therefore have decided to move there permanently. But neither one of us has a job out there. So is there any chance that either on of us or possibly even both of us to collect unemployment until one of us finds a job?

I had heard that if it was $14.00 or less than the employer didn't have to turn in a 1099 and therefore I wouldn't have to pay taxes on the money my welding truck made

We have always filed jointly in our taxes but my wife did not work in 2006 to take care of our 1 year old baby. What option(s) would allow us to get the best returns? Should we continue to file "married filing jointly" or should I file "married but filing separately" and claim both my wife and baby as dependents? We have a mortgage and student loans. Should my wife even file even though she made zero dollars in 2006? My income in 2006 was $70k. Any advice in maximizing our returns for this year would be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend and I were togather for almost 3 years. He and his daughter moved out this October. However since the address where they lived was mine for the last year...can I legally claim her on my taxes without getting in trouble? I know that he is the father..he should claim her...but I took care of her. He was out running around and doing his man thing or working nights. Her mother has her the paperwork that I need to file as well as court ordered paperwork showing that the daughter lived there at my address because my ex-boyfriend got custody of his daughter this past year and the address that shows is mine.??????

I'll be filing my taxes either online or using one of the box sets (such as Taxcut, Taxact, etc...). Can I write off my car payments or interest, my gas mileage to and from work, or any other expenses that I pay everyday?

This is a two part Question. Please don't answer this unless you really know the answer. Thank you.

First Part:
I got married 15 years ago to my second husband. I never changed my SS card name to include my new last name. How do I go about doing this, and is it a bad thing that I haven't done it?
Second Part:
In years past (after my second marriage) our joint tax return was always filed by our tax lady showing my last name as hypenated putting my first married name, then my last married name. Is all this going to mess me up as far as getting my new SS card with my second married name, OR when it's time to collect social security?

on a w2, can you an employee elect do pay in $0.00 all year, but have the employer collect solely for fica and ss?
been with the same company for 3 years, i filled out a w4 when i first started. i just recived my w2 today, and it has federal blank, but fica and social security paid in.
looked at both '04 and '05, and i had paid in.
somehow, no clue how, but on my '06, this box is blank, i looked thru paystubs from 04-05, and fed wt is listed on the pay stub, but it is not listed at all on '06.
of course i want to know how this happened, but can the legally submit $0.00 thru out the year. i filed for them to take it out, really, whats going on here?
i understand i am solely financially liable, but is there anything i can do other than have them change the way its filed. have i any recouse? or something??!
