For Federal taxes you can get deductions if you have children, go to school...etc. But what are some deductions you can claim for state taxes?

I'm in VA. I ask this because 4 years ago I used to get a full refund of the state taxes i paid back, now for the past 2 years i was only able to get back $30. Could it be because i went full time? But that wouldn't make sense because i used to get close to $1000 back. Now i pay more taxes, shouldn't it make more sense that i at least get back that $1000?

The link below is the instruction to the VA state tax return. Page 11 has a worksheet for itemized deductions. They appear to be similar the the federal itemized deductions.

Each state is different, you can claim some medical expenses, some of your child care, moving expense if related to work, uniforms, part of your utilities and house expense if you have a home based business, home mortgage interest..... Need to check with the tax professional when you get your taxes prepared

Different states have different rules, but it's unusual for them to have many deductions, if any. In some states you get personal exemptions for each family member.

-Medical costs (these are not deductible at the Fed level unless they make up a pretty large % of your AGI - but many states will let you deduct them including co-pays and prescriptions)
-Auto registration costs

It varies by state.

Some states allow most deductions that the feds do. Some allow none at all.
