Could anyone please tell me if a borough council (Middlesbrough) can refuse to accept to(take back a debt) instead of allowing baliffs to enter my home and take what items i have,to recover monies owed for council tax.I eas told by one of there advisors that management had told staff to NOT accept offers from people who make an offer to pay back what they owe in council tax.I thought the law stated that,if i made an offer, then council would accept it and there by stop any attempt by baliffs to take what little i do have. But a management derective is forbiding any staff to accept. Is this right? Please answer only if you know rules regulations on council matters.I stand to lose my family over this, and the past 4years of hell we have suffered from them.THANKS

Just seen the news of this on the Yahoo page and am most disappointed. I was really hoping they would allow for this, but at the same time, didn't think the governement would let £16bn a year slip through their fingers. What does anyone else think?

I had paid for the item. Later when i went it again found that the seller was mentioned as NO LONGER A REGISTERED USER. I did not get my stuff ...filed for the claim and its been months i have not even received my refund. This has happened to me twice. And i dont know what to do. I feel like ebay cannot do anything with these kind of things...they do not take any responsibility. So i think if i buy anything from ebay i will get cheated . Any suggestions ?

Please help. I am a single parent with a 3 year old. I got a fulltime job as a temp and my child started nursery. I receive working tax credits to help fund the child care costs. Earlier this year my temp contract ended and I have spent all my time applying for perm jobs and ringing the recruitment agency to get another contract. If I pulled my child out of nursery it would destroy them. I still haven't got a job and my payments have suddenly stopped. What will happen to me if they have found out? I'm still technically employed I just haven't had a current contract for a while. I so scared and I'm trying so hard to get another job. I have a good level of education and am willing to work. Honest answers only please xx

I have heard that if you are single and living in a flat by yourself you can get a reduction on council tax. Is this true and how do I apply for it.

OK we need to recycle more thats been agreed BUT why do the Government go for this microchip weighing of rubbish? why not do a local competition where the people who've recylced the most get a reward ? Like if you recycle 80% of your domestic waste you get a 10% rebate on your council tax and if your don't meet that target you pay the full amount? Just a thought as this spy in the bins and individual billing per kilo will just lead to more fly tipping in my view.

I know that by doing this I would be paying 18% tax (with no NI). But is this true? There must some pitfalls, otherwise everyone would become a subcontractor. Thanks

For the past three months i have been paying BR tax code. After numerous phone calls to the tax office and my payroll they have finally issued me with 503L, then i was told that next pay will be on a month one basis (which i assume will show as 503L M1?). And apparently i will not be getting my rebate. What does this mean? Will i have to pay excess tax again? Or less? And what about after that?

Additional Details

I do have another part-time job. The revenue had actually sent me notification that my fulltime job will be on 503L so i rang payroll to make sure they have recieved it too... they hadnt... so i had to call the revenue to fax it over ... twice. The last time i called my employers payroll they said the months will be on a month one basis. I still dont understand the cumultative/non cumulative process. Its all too confusing!

I am about to go into partnership with a friend of mine. He is a painter/decorator and when we were looking at the local adverts of other painters we noticed that most were CIS registered. From what i can gather this is only relevant if the person is going to be a sub-contractor, which my friend is not going to be (he will be an employed director of the company). Is this correct or does he have to be (or the compnay) CIS registered no matter what?
